Jazz to Sign Former Marshall Star to 10-Day Contract

Will Hardy assesses the Utah 10 day contract scenario.

On Friday, it was announced that the Utah Jazz have signed shooting guard/small forward Trevion Kinsey to a 10-day contract.

Turning 24 on March 10, it is a wonderful early birthday gift for Kinsey who will make his NBA debut the first time he steps on the court for Utah. He went undrafted out of Marshall in the 2023 NBA Draft. Kinsey played for the Jazz in the Summer League but was cut on October 11. He has spent the season in the G-League playing for the Salt Lake City Stars.

Utah had an open roster spot so no one needed to be released to fit Kinsey on the team.

Kinsey’s Stellar Tenure With Marshall

Kinsey played five seasons for Marshall. In 2022-23, he was named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year. That season, he averaged 22.1 points, 4.9 rebounds, 5.4 assists, and 1.7 steals in his 32 games. He connected on 54.2% of his field goal attempts.

Marshall was previously in Conference USA during Kinsey’s first four years there. He was named First Team All-Conference USA once and to the Second Team twice.

Over 154 career regular season games at Marshall, Kinsey averaged 17.1 points, 4.9 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.1 steals. He shot 50.7% from the field, 30.2% on three-point tries, and 73.2% from the free-throw line.

Additionally, Kinsey’s 2,641 career collegiate points are the most in Marshall history as he surpassed Jon Elmore’s 2,138. Elmore played for Marshall from 2015-19 and is now on the Stockton Kings in the G-League.

G-League Stats

In the 2023-24 G-League season, Kinsey has appeared in 25 games. During the season, he is averaging 10.2 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.9 assists. Kinsey has shot the ball well at 55.8% from the field, 46.8% from beyond the three-point arc, and 84.0% from the charity stripe. That three-point accuracy is currently best in the G-League, albeit on just 2.5 tries per game.

Overall, the Stars own a 12-13 record on the season.

Jazz Looking to Play Out Season

The Jazz currently have injuries to Taylor Hendricks (toe) and Lauri Markkanen (quadriceps). Both will miss Saturday’s game against the Denver Nuggets.

While there was a time it looked like Utah could play itself into the Play-In Tournament, that no longer seems to be the case because of recent struggles. After January 15, they had a 22-20 record. During the ensuing 21 games, Utah is just 6-15.  The Jazz now have a 28-35 record, 12th in the Western Conference. That puts them 5.5 games behind the 10th-seeded Golden State Warriors.

With the postseason now seemingly a pipe dream, it can mean extended time for the young pieces occupied on Utah’s roster. Perhaps the Jazz will give Kinsey some run to show whether he can be deserving of a roster spot now and in the future especially with Utah floundering.
