NBA February Monthly Awards Handed Out

On Monday, the NBA handed out their monthly awards for February.

In the Eastern Conference, Jayson Tatum of the Boston Celtics was named Player of the Month. The top rookie in the conference for February was Brandon Miller of the Charlotte Hornets. The Miami Heat’s Erik Spoelstra was named the Eastern Conference Coach of the Month.

The Western Conference saw Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks named Player of the Month. Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs was named Rookie of the Month, and Steve Kerr of the Golden State Warriors has been named the top head coach for last month out west.

Here’s how the February monthly award winners fared.

February’s Players of the Month

Led By Tatum, the Celtics have currently won 11 in a row, the first nine of which came in February. They went 9-1 in the month (only losing to the Los Angeles Lakers on February 1) with Tatum having appeared in all 10 games.

The recently turned 26-year-old (March 3) posted averages of 27.2 points, 8.9 rebounds, 6.7 assists, 1.1 steals, and 0.8 blocks during the month. Playing 36 minutes a contest, Tatum shot 48% from the field, 35.1% on three-pointers, and 88.7% from the charity stripe. He scored 41 points on February 13 and had three other games where he scored more than 30.

The Mavericks went 8-3 in the month of February which included a seven-game winning streak. Having just turned 25 on February 28, Doncic played in all 11 games this past month.

During the month, Doncic played 37.2 minutes per game averaging 33.4 points, 9.6 rebounds, 10.3 assists, 1.8 steals, and 0.6 blocks. He made more than half his shot attempts (51.7%), nearly 40% of his three-point tries (39.8%), and connected on 78.7% of his free-throw attempts. Doncic totaled two triple-doubles in the month and eight games of at least 30 points.

February’s Rookies of the Month

The second overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, Miller played 13 games for the Hornets in February. The 21-year-old spent the month averaging 20.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.8 steals, and 0.8 blocks. He shot 44.8% from the field, 37.4% on threes, and 88.2% on free-throws. In two of the games, Miller scored over 30 points.

Wembanyama continued to put up unreal numbers in the month of February. Just 20 years old, he was the first pick of the 2023 NBA Draft. In 12 February games, he averaged 21.3 points, 10.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 2.0 steals, and 3.9 blocks. During the month, he had a shooting split of .474/.413/.831. On February 12, he recorded a triple-double that included 10 blocks.

February’s Coaches of the Month

Spoelstra and the Heat went 8-3 during the month of February. Their three losses came against three of the best teams in the NBA, the Los Angeles Clippers, the Celtics, and the Denver Nuggets. They beat four over-.500 teams in the Orlando Magic, Milwaukee Bucks, New Orleans Pelicans, and Sacramento Kings.

After having their struggles for much of the season, the Warriors seemed to rebound in February. Kerr’s Warriors went 11-3 in the month including a five-game winning streak. Nine of the 11 wins in the month came by double figures. Two of the losses were to top Western Conference teams: the Clippers and Nuggets.
