On the day of their first preseason game, the Boston Celtics announced that Jay Scrubb, one of their standout players from Summer League, suffered a torn ACL in practice on Saturday. Earlier in the offseason, Boston signed Scrubb to a two-way contract to make him a part of the Celtics roster. This was shortly after the Orlando Magic waived him.
As it currently stands, there is no update regarding the severity of the injury.

In five games during this year’s Summer League, Scrubb averaged 14.4 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.4 assists. Scrubb also shot 40% from the three-point line.
The Celtics brought Scrubb to Boston to compete for a main roster spot to add depth to their wings next to their star players, Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. It was likely the Celtics were going to give Scrubb some regular minutes during Boston’s preseason games.
In three seasons split between the Los Angeles Clippers and the Magic, Scrubb has played in 24 games and started one of them.
Throughout his career, Scrubb averages 4 points per game and 1.4 rebounds per game on 41.6 FG%.

What’s Next for Jay Scrubb and the Boston Celtics?
Scrubb played impressive basketball this summer. However, the Kentucky native was not expected to have a consistent role with the Celtics on the main roster this season.
Being on a two-way contract, Scrubb was likely going to spend most of the 2023-24 season on Boston’s G League roster, the Maine Celtics.
However, one of the Celtics’ weaknesses going into this season is their depth.
Though it was a bit of a longshot, there was a possibility Scrubb became a rotation piece for the Celtics this season.
Scrubb has shown glimpses of being a solid scorer in the league. The team was hoping to see him further develop while on the two-way contract and polish his game.
Nothing is official pertaining to Scrubb’s injury timeline. Hopefully for Scrubb and the Celtics, he will not miss the entire 2023-24 season.
Because of Scrubb being on a two-way contract, he is not on Boston’s books following this upcoming season.
That said, Scrubb played very well in Summer League. It would not be shocking to see the Celtics give Scrubb another opportunity when he recovers from his injury.
