With the success of UCLA and Arizona in the Pac-12, USC is looking to get back into contention. Isaiah Collier’s play overseas shows that USC has a chance to win the Pac-12 this upcoming season. Collier’s explosive play on both ends gives the team an element they never had.

What Is the Hype All About?

Collier is one of the more talked about players in the country. Ranking first in the 247 Sports 2023 player rankings, Collier is also a player on the Wooden Award watch list. Therefore, people expect him to perform as one of the top guards in the country in his very first season. This may look like a lot of hype for a first-year, but Collier proved a lot in high school. He participated in the McDonald’s All-American Game and played for the prestigious Wheeler High School. He received a lot of accolades and played under intense pressure. More importantly, Collier thrived in those environments instead of caving to the immense expectations.

The hype is real because Collier showed people he is the real deal when his number gets called. Furthermore, his game will translate to college as he produces at a high level.

Collier’s Play Overseas

Collier dominated in the first game in Greece. He produced 20 points and six assists in their three-point win, dominating through his pace of play. Collier got out in transition and attacked the defensive downhill. His fast pace allowed the Trojans to get easy shots and play more efficient basketball. Collier’s physical prowess proved to be a major factor in his success. His speed and strength allowed him to get by his defenders with ease. Collier has a real chance to make a lasting impact at USC because of his skill and physical tools.

Furthermore, his defense is another area in which he excels. He has a nose for the ball and gets deflections and steals frequently. For USC to play at a faster pace, turnovers are an essential element to getting out in transition. His ability to disrupt opposing guards bodes well for the Trojans this season.

Why USC Can Contend

USC had good guards last season, but Collier brings a different aspect to the team: he is a guy who makes everyone better. USC has guards that score and defend, but they are not playmakers. The players will now get easier shots. More importantly, Collier is a gamer. He produces in big ways and thrives in big moments. Although he is just a first year, he has the game of a professional. USC will contend because of Collier’s competitiveness. It is high praise for Collier, and he needs to continue this success into the actual season.
