One of Europe’s top basketball prospects, 19-year-old Croatian big man Zvonimir Ivisic, announced his commitment to the University of Kentucky on Tuesday. The decision has key benefits for both a talented center with NBA aspirations and a college basketball powerhouse looking to return to glory.
Kentucky Lands Top European Prospect Zvonimir Ivisic
Ivisic’s Pre-College Career
Prior to joining the Wildcats, Ivisic has become well-known in the international basketball scene thanks to his standout performances in this summer’s FIBA U20 Tournament. The 7-foot-2, 220-pound center displayed an impressive two-way skill set throughout Croatia’s run, averaging 11.4 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.4 blocks per game while shooting 34% from deep. Despite the team’s 14th-place finish, he showcased his mobility, shooting, and defense throughout, providing NBA-ready tools for a player about to enter the NCAA.
Speaking of the NBA, this isn’t Ivisic’s first rodeo with the draft process. The center previously declared for the 2022 and 2023 Drafts, but withdrew in order to prepare more in Europe. Now, he’s hoping third time’s the charm in the 2024 Draft, which he cannot withdraw from given league rules. However, he is currently focused on helping Kentucky win. Additionally, he works towards getting closer to his NBA goal, according to a recent interview with ESPN’s Jonathan Givony.
“I decided to come to Kentucky because it’s the best spot in the US for talented basketball players,” Ivisic said. “Coach Calipari is a Hall of Fame coach that sent more players to the NBA than anyone else.”
Givony also pointed out that recent changes to the NCAA have made it possible for an influx of young international prospects to join a common route to the NBA:
“Ivisic’s commitment represents a sea change that has occurred with the proliferation of name, image and likeness (NIL) deals, which has allowed international players to make hundreds of thousands of dollars in some cases while playing college basketball, completely changing the European market.”
What Ivisic Brings to the Table
As mentioned earlier, Ivisic is yet another international unicorn. He has enough agility to bring the ball up the floor and finish with authority. His game is not limited to the paint. However, as evidenced by his smooth jumper that adds to his offensive versatility. As mentioned earlier, his defense is another noteworthy aspect of his game. Ivisic uses his length to his advantage, disrupting otherwise easy looks at the basket.

Ivisic is right to point out how Kentucky has churned out a plethora of NBA players (128 so far). Many of their drafted players have become stars in their own right. He is hoping Capilari and his staff can do the same for him when the 2024 Draft rolls around.
How Ivisic Helps Kentucky
Ivisic hasn’t even suited up for the Wildcats yet, and his impact is already evident. With Kentucky losing big men Ugonna Onyenso and Aaron Bradshaw to injuries, Ivisic’s arrival comes at a perfect time. He doesn’t only help their center depth, but also fortifies their defense. Kentucky finished sixth in blocks per game in the SEC (3.8). Ivisic has been viewed as an immediate floor-raiser for the program.
The Athletic’s Kyle Tucker pointed out that UK now has “at least one five-star freshman at all three perimeter positions, plus super seniors Antonio Reeves and Tre Mitchell.” It’s a good sign for a team that finished fourth in the SEC and ultimately fell to the Kansas Jayhawks in the second round of March Madness. The addition was also good enough for CBS Sports’ Gary Parrish to rank Kentucky at #16 (a modest one-spot improvement) in his latest Top-25 And 1 Rankings.
The Last Word on Zvonimir Ivisic
Given the abundance of European talent in the league, it’s admirable that Ivisic aspires to join their ranks. Furthermore, he certainly has the skills to do so. He has taken the right step in advancing his career by committing to Kentucky. Calipari can help turn his dreams into reality sooner rather than later. As for the Wildcats, it’s clear they’ve received a special prospect. Ivisic, along with their other recent additions, can help elevate the program once more.
