Another Wild Weekend In College Hoops

Aliyah Boston leads the charge for a wild college basketball weekend.

A lot of hearts were broken this weekend just days before Valentine’s Day. In total, six ranked teams suffered upsets at the hands of unranked teams, including the number one team in all the land. Two other ranked teams lost as well. In addition, it seems like no one on the bubble wants to actually make the tournament, as a lot of bubble teams lost over the weekend. And that’s just on the men’s side. On the women’s side number one faced off against number three in a battle of undefeateds and three ranked teams lost to unranked opponents. Another ranked team lost too. Here’s a recap of another crazy college basketball weekend.

Another Wild Weekend In College Hoops

Men’s Hoops

Down Goes #1

In the afternoon of Super Bowl Sunday Northwestern was able to topple the #1 ranked Purdue Boilermakers. Purdue center National Player of the Year frontrunner Zach Edey continues his outstanding season, scoring 24 points and grabbing 8 rebounds. But he was outshined by a pair of guards on the other side. Boo Buie had 26 points as a part of an impressive 26/2/4/3/3 stat line. Backcourt mate Chase Audige added 15 points of his own.

It is, of course, a huge win for the Wildcats. It is an impressive sixth quad 1 win for them. They are safely in the tournament now with the great win over the nation’s top team. Chris Collins’ squad is in good position to make their second NCAA Tournament appearance in school history.

Arizona Suffers Shocking Upset

Spencer Jones and Stanford came into the weekend not having beaten a top 5 team in a long time. They also hadn’t beaten Arizona in a long time. Both of those things changed on Saturday. Jones scored all 18 of his points in the second half. All four starters scored in double figures. Michael O’Connell led the way with 22 points. The Cardinal did a really good job of keeping Azuolas Tubelis, the PAC-12’s leading scorer, from getting going, which is the key to beating Arizona in any game.

Oklahoma State Picks Up Key Win

The Cowboys currently sit right on the bubble. But their win over #11 Iowa State on Saturday puts them squarely on the right side. They needed another signature win and they got that in Ames, completing the season sweep of the Cyclones. John-Michael Wright led all scorers with 19 points. Oklahoma State dominated the entire second half, outscoring Iowa State by 14. They also held ISU’s leading scorers Jaren Holmes and Gabe Kalscheur in check. It was an impressive win that does a lot of good for their resume.

Tennessee Is Weird

Tennessee is starting to look like a really weird team. Sometimes they look Final Four good, other times they’re losing their 5th game to an unranked opponent (All five came while ranked in the top 11 themselves.) this year as they did on Saturday. This time it was a loss to Mizzou on a DeAndre Gholston buzzer-beating three-pointer. The Vols did play pretty well but still lost. Tyreke Key had 23 points off the bench for them as they lost their third game out of their last four after becoming the #2 ranked team.

Women’s Hoops

South Carolina Is The Undisputed Top Dog

The Gamecocks had already been the unanimous #1 team in every single AP Poll this season, including the preseason. But even if there was any debate that is gone after dominating undefeated #3 LSU on Sunday. The previously 23-0 Tigers were no match for the Gamecocks in Columbia. Superstar Aliyah Boston had 14 points and 9 rebounds but she wasn’t even the star of the show. Kamilla Cardoso had an 18 point, 13 rebound double-double, and Zia Cooke dropped 17 points of her own. Both Cardoso and Cooke did that off the bench.
