Chris Paul re-signed with the Phoenix Suns. The two sides agreed to a 4-year contract worth $120 million, or $30 million per season. This contract ties him down through the 2024-25 season.
Chris Paul Re-Signs with Phoenix Suns
Over his legendary 16-year NBA career, Paul has played for the New Orleans Hornets, Los Angles Clippers, Houston Rockets, Oklahoma City Thunder, and now the Suns. He has been an 11-time All-Star, and 10-time All-NBA player. Paul has put up 18.3 points and 9.4 assists per game for his career. He was originally drafted in the 1st round, 4th overall of the 2005 NBA draft by the New Orleans Hornets. Last season he scored 16.4 points and 8.9 assists for the Suns.
The Future of the Phoenix Suns
Chris Paul was just an invaluable piece to the Phoenix Suns NBA Finals run. He declined his $44.4 million dollar player option to secure himself a longer deal and more guaranteed money. Chris Paul’s ability to probe into the midrange for highly efficient jumpers was able to carry the Phoenix through tough stretches in the playoffs. Paul’s legendary pick-and-roll prowess has helped aid improvement in Deandre Ayton’s game and the Suns’ offense. Along with Monty Williams, he is also responsible for guiding the Suns youth to playing winning basketball throughout the regular season and playoffs.
This deal will hold Chris Paul until the age of 39. Paul has been able to defy Father Time thus far, but the Suns are taking a big risk signing him to such a big deal. They have likely resigned themselves to over-paying an old Chris Paul if it affords them more chances at an NBA Championship right now. Over the next few years, Paul will take a backseat to Devin Booker and Deandre Ayton, with the hope that they will improve enough to win a championship.
