Arizona State showed a lot of resilience coming back from 15 points and 9 points but fell short. CJ Elleby hit a step-back three pointer with four seconds left after Jalen Graham made one of two free throws. This was a heartbreaking loss for the Sun Devils who continue to struggle on the road. Elleby was by far the best player on the floor in this game. He also hit a shot to tie the game at 64.
Washington State Stuns Arizona State
It looked like Washington State was going to pull away when they went up 48-33 with 15:35 left but Arizona State went on a 18-3 run to tie the game at 51-51. Washington State responded with an 8-0 run of their own. Finally, Arizona State went on an 11-0 run to go up 64-62. Then, Elleby made a clutch three that proved to be the game winner. Elleby had 27 points on 8-19 shooting, 12 rebounds, and two blocks. Issac Bonton scored 12 points with six rebounds and seven assists. Jeff Pollard and Noah Williams both added 7 points.
Remy Martin finally failed to score 20 points for the first time in seven games. He had an overall awful game 12 points on 4-15 shooting and only was 3-6 from the free throw line. Romello White had a really good game scoring 16 points making 6 of 10 shots, 11 rebounds and four assists. Rob Edwards added 11 points and two steals. Alonzo Verge provided a spark off the bench scoring 11 points on 5-9 shooting. Jalen Graham had nine points on 4-5 shooting and made a clutch layup late in the game.
The Difference
Although the Sun Devils just edged the Cougars in turnovers 21 to 19, the turnovers occurred early in the game which allowed the Cougars to get off to an early lead. Those turnovers turned out to be costly for the Sun Devils. Washington State out-shot Arizona State from the three point line 40 percent to 26 percent. Arizona State also struggled making free throws only converting eight of 15. While, Washington State converted 11 of 16. The Cougars edged the Sun Devils in steals 12 to 8.
Looking Ahead
Arizona State has a game at Washington on Saturday. Washington is only 2-6 in Pac-12 play but is dangerous because they have a very talented roster. Also, the Sun Devils have struggled on the road. Washington State has Arizona on Saturday.
