NBA Picks January 23rd

When you decide to start a gambling column I think it’s best to start with a bad day. That way there is nowhere for you to go but up! Well, that is exactly how this column started yesterday. I went 1-2 on the day and lost .04 units. The day was saved by Zion Williamson’s incredible fourth quarter, where he scored 17 points to help him hit the over of 14.5 points. Regardless of how yesterday went, we are back again today with three more NBA picks on a rather light night.

Dallas Mavericks @ Portland Trail Blazers: Over 229.5 Total Points (-110)

The simple explanation for this is that the last nine times these teams have played the over has hit in six of those contests. I like picks based on statistical trends, and this is a trend that works in my favor. Taking the over in a basketball is the exciting pick. Do you want to see points scored? Do you want to see superstars being superstars? Take the over in this game and root for Luka Doncic to be Luka Doncic, and Damian Lillard to be Damian Lillard. Both of these teams are also giving up more than 110 points per game, so that should lend itself to some extra excitement.

The Play: 1 Unit to win .091 Units

Washington Wizards @ Cleveland Cavaliers: Wizards Moneyline (+114)

Simply put, this is a bad game. Two teams with bad records, and not a whole lot to play for. I do however believe that the Washington Wizards are a better team than the Cleveland Cavaliers. They certainly have the best player in tonight’s game in Bradley Beal, and the Cavs have lost eight of their last ten games. Take the money line here to ensure yourself a little value on this game.

The Play: 1 Unit to win 1.14 Units

Los Angeles Lakers @ Brooklyn Nets: Lakers -5 (-115)

Coming off a less than stellar performance at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night should lend itself to a much better game this time around for LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and the whole Los Angeles Lakers crew. This Brooklyn Nets team is still in a feeling-out process with superstar Kyrie Irving, and indications are that it is not going all that well. This line feels like a pretty good number but I think James and Davis can put together a few good stretches tonight and push the Lakers to a win and a cover.

The Play: 1 Unit to win .87 Units

Season to Date: 1-2-0/Down .04 Units
