The Boston Celtics have assigned guard Romeo Langford to their G-League affiliate, the Maine Red Claws. Langford was the 14th overall pick in the recent 2019 NBA Draft.
Boston Celtics Assign Romeo Langford to NBA G-League
The Boston Celtics announced Monday morning that they would be sending Langford to the Maine Red Claws. The move comes as a bit of a surprise, as the Celtics used their top pick in the 2019 NBA Draft to select Langford. Rookies Carsen Edwards and Grant Williams have already established bench roles for the Celtics, despite being later picks.

Many criticized the Langford pick in real-time. Perhaps the critics were right to be concerned. In two preseason contests, Langford averaged just a single point and 2.5 rebounds per game in 10.6 minutes. He then missed the first three games of the regular season with a knee injury. In total, he’s seen the floor for just 14.4 seconds. He has yet to record a single NBA statistic.
Langford was a solid prospect coming out of high school but his draft stock steadily fell throughout his freshman season. At Indiana, he averaged 16.5 points and 5.4 rebounds per game but struggled shooting from behind the arc.
Coming into the draft, the Celtics already had a logjam at the wing position with the likes of Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum, and Gordon Hayward all playing significant minutes. Langford was bound to be the odd-man-out, making his selection by the Celtics even more strange. Boston could have selected several players more suitable for their roster, but instead, they will be sending a lottery pick to their G-League affiliate.
Of course, this news does not necessarily spell the end for Langford. He was a solid NCAA talent and could still very well translate to the NBA. Perhaps this is just a small step backward for a very talented young man. However, for now, the jury is still out on Langford until further notice.
