Report: Boston Celtics Sign Jaylen Brown To Four-Year, $115 Million Extension

The Boston Celtics have agreed to sign forward Jaylen Brown to a four-year, $115 million contract extension. Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN was the first to report the deal on Monday afternoon.

Jason Glushon, Brown’s agent, as well as Celtics GM Danny Ainge, negotiated much of the deal over the weekend. This is Ainge’s first rookie extension deal as a GM since Rajon Rondo in 2009.

Celtics Locking Up Brown

Brown’s contract extension will keep the 22-year-old in Boston through the end of the 2023-24 season.

Initially, the Celtics reportedly offered a four- year, $80 million extension earlier in the off-season. Brown, however, was looking for considerably more. Brown got his wish roughly $28.8 million a year. By locking Brown up for future seasons, the Celtics ensured that they would retain his services on a reasonable dollar amount while giving the forward a desired, lucrative deal.

Brown, the third overall pick in the 2016 draft, has developed into one of the league’s top young forwards. In two seasons with Boston, Brown averaged 11 points and 4 rebounds, shooting 46.2 percent from the field.

Brown’s Value in Boston

Brown’s usage and role will exponentially increase this season and well beyond due to the absence of Kyrie Irving and Al Horford.

The Celtics didn’t quite live up to expectations in the 2018-19 season, as they got booted by Milwaukee Bucks in the second round of the playoffs. Everyone pointed fingers at each other and bickered about each other’s struggles that lead to scuffles and rumors in the media.

Brown has made some struggles but has also shown great potential in the playoffs and the off-season. He also averaged 18 points in last year’s playoffs and was a starter for Team USA in the FIBA Cup where he was one of the better defenders for Team USA.

Brown is a young, two-way player who can flash tons of potential. His year-to-year improvements is a good sign for the Celtics that an even bigger ceiling could be on the rise.
