Dejounte Murray signed a four-year, $64-million contract extension with the San Antonio Spurs according to Shams Charania. Bonuses can push the deal up to $70 million. Murray would have become a restricted free agent in the 2020 off-season. The Spurs are showing great faith in their young point guard to sign an extension after coming off an ACL injury.
Dejounte Murray Inks Deal with San Antonio Spurs
After being drafted 29th overall by the San Antonio Spurs, Murray struggled to get minutes in his first season after only getting 8 minutes per game in his first season, however after Tony Parker gave up his starting spot to him, he showed the NBA what he could do and he became one of the best defensive guards in the NBA. Murray missed the entire 2018-19 season because of an ACL injury.
Now, the young point guard is ready to start for the Spurs and show them that he indeed deserves that extension. Before tearing his ACL, Murray averaged 8 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.2 steals per game. Murray is also the youngest player to be named to an NBA all-defensive team at 21 years old. He has been great in the preseason and looked like he never injured his ACL at all.

ACL injuries can always be difficult to come back from, as we have seen with DeMarcus Cousins, but Murray is still young so if he’s lucky he shouldn’t have any problems going forward.
With the extension, the Spurs are showing Murray that they believe in him and that he could become a cornerstone in the future. Murray is going to have great opportunities to prove what he can be this season. If he remains healthy, that $64 million contract could end up being relatively cheap for the Spurs.
