Kevin Love has decided to secure his long-term future in the NBA by agreeing to a four year $120 million dollar extension with the Cleveland Cavaliers. This deal brings Love’s current contract to five years $145 million. Love becomes the new number one option in Cleveland, as he was with the Minnesota Timberwolves at the beginning of his career.
Kevin Love Agrees to Four Year Extension with Cavaliers
In his four years with the Cavaliers, Love has averaged 17.25 points per game. These numbers are decent, but a far cry from the 26 points he used to average with the Timberwolves. The dip in points is to be expected since he joined a team with both LeBron James and Kyrie Irving.
Love has proven to be a shaky player in the postseason. Averaging only 15.3 points per game in his four seasons of making the playoffs with the Cavaliers. He did win a championship in Cleveland but has proven time and time again that his postseason performance can be a wild card. This is proven no better than his performance against the Indiana Pacers. In that series, he averaged 11.4 points while shooting only 33 percent from the field. The Cavaliers have to be prepared for some frustration as LeBron isn’t there to bail this team out anymore.
Kevin Love’s extension will usher in a new era of basketball for the Cavaliers. Love will be assigned with the task of being the veteran leader on the roster. Especially with rookie Collin Sexton joining the team. This is interesting since Love has had chemistry issues with teammates before. Most notably last year being confronted by teammates after leaving a game against the Oklahoma City Thunder only playing three minutes. In that game, the Cavaliers suffered an embarrassing loss of seismic proportions. Tying a franchise record of points given up, 148. It will be interesting to see how things pan out long-term for this team.
