Bryan Colangelo is no longer the Philadelphia 76ers‘ president of basketball operations.

The 76ers announced Colangelo agreed to resign Thursday after an extensive investigation regarding his alleged use of burner Twitter accounts. These accounts were used to criticize his team’s own players and coaches.

The Reveal

The law firm that was hired to carry out this extensive investigation revealed that Colangelo’s wife was behind these accounts. According to multiple sources, she admitted to establishing and operating the accounts.

This bizarre situation has been taking the NBA world by storm. It left the 76ers in a position where they had to either fire Colangelo or risk trust issues throughout the organization.

The 76ers knew they had to act fast with the NBA draft and free agency lurking around the corner. They also had to act fast so that they didn’t lose the trust of their sensational, budding superstars.

What’s Next?

Another situation that is lurking in the NBA is LeBron James‘ free agency. The 76ers have been a constant contender in landing LeBron. Other possible landing spots are the Los Angeles Lakers, Houston Rockets or remaining with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The last thing that the 76ers wanted was to show the organization having some turmoil. If they want to have a leg up on the LeBron race, they should definitely go after David Griffin. James has been vocal with his praises for Griffin in the past.

The 76ers will have to act fast in order to dilute this embarrassing situation. It wouldn’t hurt, however, if they could also improve their chances of landing LeBron in the process. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

For the time being, Head Coach Brett Brown will run basketball operations. The only other coach who runs basketball operations simultaneously is Tom Thibodeau.
