The Orlando Magic have signed free agent small forward Jonathon Simmons to a contract worth $20 million over three years.

Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN broke the news on Friday evening:

Jonathon Simmons Signs Three-Year Contract With Orlando Magic

Simmons’ new deal will take him through the end of the 2020 season.

Simmons averaged 6.2 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game last season for the San Antonio Spurs. Due to a greater opportunity in the playoffs, he averaged 10.5 points per game. His athleticism helps him defend on the perimeter and have high-flying finishes at the rim. There were flashes of improvement in Simmon’s jump shot, as he worked well in the mid range game.

The injury to Kawhi Leonard in the Western Conference Finals gave an opportunity for Simmons to show out. He scored in double figures in each game of the series. There was an increase in minutes for him throughout the postseason. Simmons was given the opportunity to play more and took advantage of the moment.

Looking forward, Simmons will provide athleticism on the wing and defense starting at small forward for Orlando. The Magic will need Simmons to continue growing as a player and improve his jump shot in order to help contend for a playoff spot in the 2017-18 season.

Simmons is going into his 3rd season in the league, during which he’ll be 28 years old. He had been with the Spurs during the entirety of his short career.
