Triston Casas suffers an apparently severe knee injury running to first base against the Twins on Friday night.

Red Sox Infielder Triston Casas Exits Game with Knee Injury

BOSTON — Boston Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas was removed from Friday’s game against the Minnesota Twins after suffering an apparent knee injury, raising concerns for a team already battling inconsistency. The incident occurred in the fourth inning when Casas, attempting to beat out a throw from Twins ace Joe Ryan, clipped first baseman Ty France’s foot and collapsed in pain after crossing the bag. Unable to rise, he left the field on a stretcher after a lengthy delay.

Triston Casas Suffers Scary Knee Injury Friday Night

Casas, 25, missed four months in the 2024 season due to a rib injury. His potential absence is a blow to a Red Sox offense struggling to find its rhythm, especially with minor injuries already affecting players like Walker Buehler, Kutter Crawford, Connor Wong, Masataka Yoshida, and Kristian Campbell. Manager Alex Cora expressed cautious concern in his postgame press conference. “[It’s a] Significant knee injury. He’s at the hospital right now… It’s tough, he works so hard. We want to see him on the field.”

Filling the Void

If Casas faces extended time on the injured list, Boston could turn to Romy Gonzalez, who currently plays a platoon with Casas, and Connor Wong, who played some first base during Casas’ absence in 2024. Boston can also call up new-turned first baseman Vaughn Grissom from Triple-A Worcester as well. Not to mention, top prospects Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer are just steps away from their big league debuts. The Red Sox hold an 18-16 record one month into the 2025 season, good for second place in the AL East. Based on how long Casas remained down following the injury, it looks like they will have to rely on one of these contingency plans or some combination of them.
