Astros Aiming to Retain Postseason Star

According to MLB insider Bob Nightengale, the Houston Astros are powerfully trying to keep their star free-agent third baseman, Alex Bregman. The postseason star is still available despite gaining interest from multiple teams such as the Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, and Toronto Blue Jays. If the Astros could hold onto him, he would stay in his natural position at third base, but it would involve a mixup in the infield lineup. It would move Isaac Paredes to second base and Jose Altuve to left field.

Bregman’s Future Remains Unknown

Jon Heyman reported that if the Astros could trade reliever Ryan Pressly, it could improve their chances of Bregman remaining with the team. However, according to Ari Alexander, Pressly has not waived his no-trade clause. While the Astros have been inclined to trade Pressly the final call will be in the hands of the 36-year-old. Pressly has also been gaining interest from the Chicago Cubs. All in all, Bregman’s decision will play a big factor with the Astros. Bregman was offered over $150 million on a six-year contract by the Astros in early December. But it was turned down by Bregman and agent Scott Boras.

Despite this, the Astros are not giving up on Bregman, who is surprisingly still on the market, making a reunion with him plausible. But the 2025 season is soon arriving and Bregman’s future will soon have to be decided. Overall, keeping Bregman opens many doors for the Astros. Bregman would provide the Astros with infield depth while also continuing to provide them with an elite bat. Since the clock is ticking for Bregman he may have to settle for a short-term contract. Even though he had his heart set on a long-term deal. But the Astros could meet Bregman halfway by offering him a short-term contract with an opt-out following the 2025 season. This would offer the Astros the boost they need for 2025 and still provide Bregman options that suit his needs.
