Marlins to Sign Former Guardians Pitcher to One-Year Deal

The Miami Marlins and right-hander Cal Quantrill have agreed to terms on a one-year deal, reports ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez. The Marlins add much-needed depth to the starting rotation that saw Jesús Luzardo traded and Braxton Garrett undergoing UCL surgery. To clear room on their 40-man roster, the Marlins placed Garrett on the 60-day injured list. The son of former major league pitcher Paul Quantrill, Cal made his MLB debut for the San Diego Padres in May 2019.

Marlins Reach One-Year Deal with Cal Quantrill

The six-year veteran has been a dependable pitcher throughout his career. In 2021-22, he was a quality starter in the Cleveland Guardians rotation. During 2022, Quantrill posted a 2.89 ERA with 121 strikeouts and 47 walks in 149 2/3 innings. In 2023, Quantrill posted a 3.38 ERA with 128 Ks to 47 BBs in 186.1 IP. But in 2023, he dealt with recurring shoulder injuries and only pitched in 19 games, posting a 5.24 ERA. But he signed with the Colorado Rockies in 2024, looking to bounce back.

Throughout his career, Quantrill has been a sinker-heavy pitcher, using the pitch 40% of the time, averaging 93.8 mph in 2024. His surface numbers were not pretty last season, but that is common for pitchers in Colorado. Quantrill was consistently one of the Rockies’ most reliable pitchers throughout 2024. In 29 games, Quantrill posted a 4.98 ERA in 148 1/3 innings. Quantrill led the Rockies pitching staff with eight wins and was second with a 1.7 WAR. Per Statcast, the veteran pitcher ranked in the bottom 10% of the league with a -11 pitching run value. He had trouble missing bats, with just a 16.8% K rate and a 21.6% whiff rate.

As Quantrill enters the 2025 season, he will look to regain the former he had with Cleveland in 2021-22. Miami is banking on Quantrill to deliver that as the rotation now has him, Sandy Alcántara, Edward Cabrera, Ryan Weathers, Max Meyer and Valente Bellozo.
