After activating David Price from the 10-day DL, the Boston Red Sox announced he will appear out of the bullpen for the remainder of the 2017 season.

Battling an elbow injury, Price had made 11 starts, putting up a 5-3 record with a 3.82 ERA in the early parts of 2017. John Farrell expressed he does not want to risk the future of Price’s big arm. He said putting him into a starting role off of the DL would be aggressive.

As they look ahead to the postseason, it is said that Price will be multi-inning reliever. It will be very interesting to see Price in a relief role; likely making appearances before arms like Addison Reed and Craig Kimbrel. Price has come into postseason relief spots before. In 2008 for the Tampa Bay Rays, Price recorded a win against his future team, the Red Sox, in Game 7 of the ALDS. In addition, he came on in relief for the Toronto Blue Jays in the ALDS against the Texas Rangers.

Price has been working to come back to the team for some time now. He was placed on the DL on July 28th. All the rehab has been done in order for him to return according to Price. Wednesday he threw a 3-inning simulated game.

The Red Sox will travel to Tampa tomorrow to take on the Rays on regular schedule. Hurricane Irma has caused many Major League series to be moved to safer located ballparks. This will be the start of a 9-game road trip for the Sox.

We will see what Farrell has in mind in terms of the types of spots and roles he sees David Price contributing to in what has been a good season for Boston thus far.
