Miami Marlins Manager Skip Schumaker Won’t Return Next Season

Miami Marlins manager Skip Schumaker has announced that he won’t be managing the team next season due to a death in the family. He also will not be managing the remainder of the 2024 season, with two games left to be played in Toronto. This means he will be available on the market this offseason as a highly desired free agent/manager. While his family matter weighs in on his decision, other significant factors exist. A major downfall season followed by numerous injuries and the farewell of many skilled players.

Skip Schumaker Bids Farewell To The Marlins

Schumaker’s Time With the Marlins & What’s Next

The Cincinnati Reds fired manager David Bell on September 22nd with five games remaining in the regular season. Now that Schumaker has become available their search for a new manager has become a little easier. Could Schumaker be their first choice? On September 27th, the Marlins played against the Toronto Blue Jays defeating them 15-5. This game carried a lot of momentum and emotions as it was a huge defeat while Schumaker managed his last game.

Schumaker has spent two seasons with the Marlins with a 143-178 record. He also led Miami to the postseason in 2023. The Marlins are the second-worst team in MLB with a 60-100 record. But without Schumaker, the Marlins would have lost even more games. Overall, Schumaker positively impacted the Marlins in many ways. Marlins third baseman Jake Burger reflected on how much Schumaker has meant to him and how he greatly appreciates all his hard work.

It’s been a rollercoaster ride this season for the Marlins as Schumaker joins many other greats who also departed: Jazz Chisholm Jr., Luis Arraez, Jorge Soler, Tanner Scott, AJ Puk, Kim Ng, Josh Bell, Bryan De La Cruz and Bryan Hoeing. With Schumaker’s expertise and talent, he will have no issue finding a new environment to thrive in. Schumaker won the NL Manager of the Year Award in 2023 and, in 2009, won the Darryl Kile Award. This award was given to Schumaker when he played for the St. Louis Cardinals as he demonstrated the qualities of a good teammate. The award is also in commemoration of player Darryl Kile. It is given out every year to a player on the Cardinals and Houston Astros.
