Another Hard-Throwing Reliever Working His Way Back To The Dodgers

Los Angeles Dodgers Manager Dave Roberts said that reliever Joe Kelly is taking steps to return to the team. The right-hander will make two rehab appearances at Triple-A Oklahoma City, pitching Thursday and Sunday, He will be activated from the Injured List sometime next week. The Dodgers will be on the road for some pivotal games, taking on the Atlanta Braves and Miami Marlins before returning home to face the Colorado Rockies. It is safe to say that fresh arms will be welcome as Los Angeles is chasing a division title.

Covering Innings

Kelly had to come in the game against the Arizona Diamondbacks to spell an injured Clayton Kershaw, suffering from a bone spur in his toe. The flame-thrower over-extended himself during that outing, and both he and Kershaw ended up on the Injured List within 24 hours. This is the reliever’s second stint on the IL.

Fighting For A Postseason Roster Spot

Kelly may be fighting for a postseason roster spot when he returns. His last seven appearances for the Dodgers have been less than stellar; The right-hander has an ERA over five, giving up eight hits, four earned runs, and four free passes. He did have seven strikeouts during that time, but control remains an issue. Sometimes, it appears as if Kelly doesn’t know where the pitch is going when he throws it. The right-hander has some work to do if he is to climb Dave Roberts’ trust tree. Will the Dodgers take a chance on his filthy “swing and miss” stuff because it plays in the postseason? The answer seems yet to be determined.

Other Viable Options

Tony Gonsolin threw two scoreless innings in his first rehab outing in Triple-A Oklahoma City. Gonsolin, who is coming off Tommy John surgery last year, struck out three and gave up one hit with no walks. If nothing else, the Dodgers will have choices come October.
