Phillies September Call-Up Options

The Philadelphia Phillies September call-up options include many players who have appeared in the majors already this season. Each team will add two players to their major league roster on September 1. Teams are allowed to have at most 14 pitchers on their major league roster during this time frame. This comes when the Phillies could bring back some players on the major league roster earlier in the season but got optioned after a player returned from injury.

At this time last season the Phillies welcomed back two players from the injured list. Therefore, the team did not have any true September call-ups last season. This year, the team is set to have actual September call-ups. Each of the candidates on this list is on the 40-man roster. The Phillies will be calling up one pitcher and one position player on September 1. Currently, there are a maximum of 13 pitchers and 13 position players on the 26-man roster.

Phillies September Call-Up Options

This list assumes the required waiting period after being optioned goes away when rosters expand.

Kolby Allard

In four major league appearances this season, Allard has a 2-0 record, a 3.50 ERA, and 13 strikeouts. Furthermore, Allard has a 120 ERA+ and a 5.67 FIP this season. If the Phillies move Taijuan Walker out of the rotation, Allard would be a logical replacement. This is because Allard has made three starts this season in the majors. Allard has a 6.50 strikeout-to-walk ratio and an 84 ERA- this season. Additionally, Allard has a career-best 2.7% walk rate and a 17.8% strikeout rate this season.

Tyler Gilbert

This season, Gilbert has a 0-0 record, a 4.50 ERA, and one strikeout in one major league appearance. Gilbert had a very brief stint on the major league roster. In the majors, Gilbert has a 108 ERA+ and a 3.67 FIP this season. To add, Gilbert has a 108 ERA and a 1.00 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Gilbert has primarily pitched for Triple-A Lehigh Valley this season. In 27 outings there, Gilbert has a 4-0 record with a 2.06 ERA and seven saves.

Seth Johnson

Since being promoted to Triple-A Lehigh Valley, Johnson has a 1-0 record with a 0.90 ERA in two starts. The Phillies acquired Johnson at the trade deadline in the Gregory Soto deal. Next season is the last minor league option year for Johnson. As a result, it might be beneficial to have Johnson pitch in the majors this season. One concern is that Johnson has a 12.5% walk rate in Triple-A and a 20.0% strikeout rate. A 1.60 strikeout-to-walk ratio is not the greatest, even with the limited sample.

Rafael Marchán

Marchán stepped up while J.T. Realmuto was out with an injury earlier in the season. In 17 major league games this season, Marchán has a .294/.345/.549 line with three home runs and six RBI, Marchán has a 146 wRC+ and a .381 wOBA in the majors this season. It is worth noting that Marchán is in his last minor league option year. Marchán would set a new career high for plate appearances in a major league season if he were to come to the plate in a game again this season.

Kody Clemens

Like other players on the Phillies 40-man roster, Clemens is in his last minor league option year. Clemens has a .242/.277/.500 line with three home runs and 10 RBI in 24 major league games this season. Furthermore, Clemens has a 110 wRC+ along with a .328 wOBA in the majors this season. Clemens is the most likely to be called up of the position player options. Adding Clemens would give the Phillies another left-handed bench bat.

Buddy Kennedy

One player who deserves a real chance on the Phillies roster is Kennedy. While Weston Wilson was on the paternity list, Kennedy spent time on the major league roster but did not appear in a game. Kennedy is in his last minor league option year. This season, Kennedy has a .200/.308/.500 line with one home run and four RBI in the majors. That came with the Detroit Tigers, who later traded Kennedy to the Phillies. Kennedy has a .958 OPS and a 147 wRC+ in 56 games for Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
