Red Sox Select Pitcher’s Contract For MLB Debut

On a day where multiple roster moves will occur, the Boston Red Sox are calling up right-hander Chase Shugart on Monday, according to MassLive’s Chris Cotillo. The reliever has spent most of the last three seasons at Triple-A Worcester. Shugart likely replaces Brennan Bernardino, who is headed the other way. The 27-year-old’s first appearance will be his MLB debut.

Red Sox Select Chase Shugart’s Contract For MLB Debut

Shugart has been in Boston’s system since they drafted him in the 12th round of the 2018 draft. He reached Triple-A with the Worcester Red Sox for the first time in 2022. Shugart’s first two seasons in AAA weren’t pretty, posting ERA’s of 6.82 and 8.22, respectively. Shugart has been better in 2024. He has a 4.98 ERA in just under 60 innings this season. Shugart is a strong strikeout pitcher, sitting down 71 opponents.

Shugart’s current campaign has been inconsistent at times. He had a 5.19 ERA at the end of May, allowing runs in eight of his 14 appearances. Shugart turned things around in a dominant June. He threw 12 ⅔ innings, gave up just one earned run and punched out 20 batters. Things turned the other way in July and August, though. Shugart has allowed 17 runs in his last 21 innings.

The Texas native has mostly appeared out of the bullpen this season. Shugart started five of his 28 contests in 2024, recording a single save. Three of his last five outings are starts, but they didn’t go well. Shugart posted a 7.20 ERA in those appearances, lasting just under 11 total innings. He does have a strikeout in 23 straight games, though.

Red Sox Monday Roster Moves

Shugart was one of many roster moves that Boston made on Monday. Catcher/infielder Mickey Gasper was also selected from Triple-A to make his major league debut. Starter Brayan Bello, who was on the paternity list, and reliever Bailey Horn, who has spent time in MLB, returned to the Red Sox. Boston also designated utilityman Jamie Westbrook for assignment. Westbrook batted just .150 in 40 major league at-bats this season.
