Phillies Acquire White Sox Reliever

As first reported by Robert Murray of FanSided, the Philadelphia Phillies acquired Chicago White Sox reliever Tanner Banks. The Phillies are sending infield prospect William Bergolla to the White Sox. This comes after Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported that the Phillies wanted to add another bullpen arm. This comes after the team traded for relief pitcher Carlos Estévez on July 28. The team has added a left-handed and right-handed relief pitcher during trade deadline week. During trade deadline week, the Phillies traded for Banks, Estévez, and outfielder Austin Hays. In that time period, the Phillies traded Bergolla, George Klassen, Samuel Aldegheri, Seranthony Domínguez, and Cristian Pache.

In 41 games this season, Banks has a 2-2 record with a 4.13 ERA and 55 strikeouts. Banks has a 102 ERA+ and a 3.28 FIP this season. Banks has a 10.9 SO9 rate this season and a 2.8 BB9 rate. Banks has made one start this season. Additionally, Banks is under team control through the 2028 season. Banks is not arbitration eligible until 2026. However, Banks is 32 years old. Banks currently has a career-best FIP and strikeout-to-walk ratio. Furthermore, Banks has a career-best in strikeouts this season. Banks has two saves this season as well. It is worth noting that Banks is 13 innings away from a career-high in the number of pitched innings.

In 67 games with High-A Jersey Shore this season, Bergolla has a .295/.350/.385 line with one home run and 29 RBI. Bergolla also has 18 stolen bases this season. Additionally, Bergolla has a 109 wRC+ and a .329 BABIP this season. Bergolla being traded is not surprising. The Phillies have a lot of middle infield depth among their higher-ranked prospects. At the major league level, the Phillies middle infield seems set for a while, so most of these prospects are blocked. Bergolla has played defensively in the minors at second base, shortstop, and third base.
