As the New York Mets have turned around their 2024 season and look to secure a wild card spot, it is clear that they could use a pitcher before the deadline. Injuries are starting to affect the team, and certain starters just are not doing well. Trading for a pitcher could certainly put the Mets in a better position.
Pitchers The Mets Should Trade For Before The Deadline
Garrett Crochet
An ace doesn’t seem like it would be a safe thing to bet on for New York. This is hopeful. However, the Mets lack what they have had before, multiple aces. New York has Kodai Senga, and maybe even Luis Severino, but Garrett Crochet is an unbelievable pitcher who plays at the same level as Jacob deGrom. The Mets would have to give up a lot for Crochet. However, the Mets should not be afraid to go after an ace. The Chicago White Sox would also benefit from this trade since the Mets have plenty of prospects to interest Chicago in, especially someone like Brett Baty, whom the Mets don’t have much of a use for.
Tanner Scott
Tanner Scott was one of the most useful pitchers last year, as he helped the Miami Marlins secure a surprising playoff berth last season. Scott has a problem with walking hitters, but he still has the ability to strike out hitters and keep his ERA relatively low. The Mets would have a useful pitcher that could come in when Edwin Diaz needs to rest, but Scott could also come in and pitch the later innings. With more injuries to the bullpen and another loss that could last the whole year, Scott would certainly bring some stability to the Mets bullpen.
Zack Littell
Zack Littell is a starter who has pretty good numbers when it comes to walking and striking out hitters, which is much needed for New York. He has struck out 84 while walking just 16, but Littell allows a lot of home runs, and his ERA is 4.17. Yet still, the Mets could still use a guy like Littell. The Mets can go to the minor leagues, as there remain two starters in Triple-A who have started five or more games.
Christian Scott and Jose Butto. Scott has the ability to control the ball well, while Butto strikes out a lot of hitters but averaged 3 walks per game in his 7 games started for New York this season. Littell has done well controlling the ball and would lead the team in strikeouts. The Mets acquiring Littell could also give them stability in the starting rotation instead of going to another pitcher in New York’s system.
Overall, the Mets should, for now, suggest a buyer mentality and look to improve the pitching room more than anything else. Either starter or another bullpen pitcher, the Mets could use acquiring a pitcher for a possible postseason run.
