On June 7th, the Toronto Blue Jays designated Cavan Biggio for assignment to make room on their roster for hot rookie Spencer Horwitz. Where will he end up now? It was a shocking move not only for fans but also for Biggio himself. Being the only organization he has been with in his career, it was certainly hard for him. But assuming he doesn’t rejoin Toronto, he may be able to thrive in a new environment. There are a few landing spots that make plenty of sense for Cavan Biggio.
Whatever team chooses him and gives him 550 at-bats, he will do well and could even do as well as he played in 2019. He could even do better, considering he has more control over the barrel and a strong work ethic. There’s no doubt that he will get picked up and that many teams will be fighting to get him. While Biggio had the option to go to the minors and remain with the Blue Jays, there was no chance he was going to do that because he is an MLB player.
He will either be playing as a contender and be the perfect 26th man on a team or be playing every day. Biggio brings a lot of professional experience, which is a strong trait that another team will want to have their hands on. If Biggio were given the playing time he deserves, he would be a productive player, and whatever team picks him up deserves to give him that playing time. Maybe it is time for him to flourish elsewhere.

Atlanta Braves

You have to wonder if some different coaching might change Biggio’s approach and get him to take that bat off his shoulder and go up to the plate looking to hit instead of endlessly working the count. Whether he will be an everyday player or play off the bench remains unknown, but Biggio would certainly do well and have a big season if he was picked up by the Braves. The Braves bench this season has been looking like a ghost town. After Ronald Acuña Jr. went on the IL with season-ending surgery, Adam Duvall moved into a starting role.
No bench player on the Braves is being allotted a lot of playing time this season except Zack Short. Most of Atlanta’s bench hasn’t been productive offensively. Biggio would be perfect for this role, which would lend a hand to the Braves roster. He could provide some power off the bench, but his versatility on defense would permit them to utilize him in different positions. Biggio is certainly looking to join a team that will get him ahead. With the Braves, he would be part of a team that is currently in second place in the NL East.
Boston Red Sox
Wouldn’t it be ironic if Biggio remained in the AL East and became a division rival with the Blue Jays? Second base is one of the Red Sox’s weakest links this season. The Red Sox would be lucky to land him to help revamp their issues at second base. Boston’s second basemen have put up some unsatisfactory numbers this season. A .168 batting average, a .210 OBP, a .447 OPS, 19 runs scored, three home runs, and 22 RBI. Biggio could certainly help beef up the offense in that department.
Cincinnati Reds
Although Biggio has been an everyday player for most of his career, this doesn’t automatically mean he will get to play every day on a new team. So, if the Reds snatched up the veteran utilityman, his role would consist of him being a reserve player. Their starting defense in the outfield and infield is already set in place. Also, the Reds are missing a notable lefty off the bench. Biggio would fit perfectly in this role with his commanding OBP and the power he provides at the plate.
Los Angeles Angels
The Los Angeles Angels have used a few different players at second base this season, but have mostly used Brandon Drury. More recently, they have relied on Kyren Paris and Luis Guillorme. Overall, the Angels haven’t had much success from second base, with Drury and Paris not performing as they should be. Luis Rengifo was supposed to be the prime choice, but with Anthony Rendon on the injured list due to a hamstring injury, Rengifo has filled the role at third. This is where Biggio comes in, as he could offer needed assistance to the Angels with their second base issue. In addition, since Biggio is a lefty, he can also offer the Angels an added lefty bat off the bench.
