Blue Jays Outfielder Changes His Approach at the Plate

Daulton Varsho

Daulton Varsho quietly impressed MLB early on in spring training and the Toronto Blue Jays are impressed. Varsho entered March 12th with six hits in 19 at-bats (.316 average), walking six times and striking out only once. He added two more hits on the 12th, producing his highest EV (Exit Velocity) of is at 107.1! There’s also no reason Varsho can’t steal around 20 bases in the regular 2024 season. Not including losses and not including the “play every position” ploy games, Varsho stands out from the rest. He is the only MLB player to play both catcher and center field in the same game in the last 20 years.

2024 Spring Training Showcases Varsho’s Changed Approach

The Change at the Plate

In 2023, the balls in play in Spring vs. 2024 Spring have shown positive changes for Varsho. For ground balls in play, he was at 33 % in 2023 and now at 42 % in 2024. He was at 20 % for line drives in 2023 and is now at 29 % in 2024. Lastly, in 2023, for flyballs/pop, he was at 47%, and now, in 2024, he’s at 29 %.

As a hitter, if you want to improve your game, it’s essential to understand that you must adapt how you play. Meaning you need to make adjustments or change your approach. It can be as simple as adjusting your hitting stance. A 104.1-mph double from Varsho on March 9th, who continues to have a strong Spring Training. Although Varsho was the 2023 DRS Leader, fans are officially hopping on the Varsho bounce-back train. He adjusted his swing, mentally and physically. On March 15th against the Detroit Tigers, Varsho hit a smooth single, scored, stole a base, and continued to look sharp. He’s opened up his hitting stance and has been chopping wood at the plate. It won’t be hard to convince people he’ll have an impressive 2024 season.

All Aboard The Varsho Train!

While spring training games don’t count, these games are important and give a sneak preview of what’s to come in the regular season. Varsho has had an improved Spring Training this season, which is exciting to see. Simplifying his approach and going back to being that dynamite player he was when he played for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Varsho has many strong qualities as a player. He has a strong arm, speed, and power and looks more comfortable in his second season with the Blue Jays.
