As reported yesterday on Twitter by MLB.com’s Jon Paul Morosi, the Seattle Mariners are finalizing a contract extension with Jean Segura, the team’s starting shortstop. While the club hasn’t confirmed that a deal is in place, the pervasive rumor is that the contract is set up for five years, and is worth a total of $70 million. Seattle is also offering a club option for 2023, which would be worth $17 million.

Jean Segura Finalizing Five-Year Extension with Mariners
Segura, who has been one of the hottest hitting players not only for Seattle but the entire American League, went on the 10-day disabled list last Friday with a high ankle sprain. His batting line reads .341/.391/.462, with four home runs and seven stolen bases through 43 games this season with the Mariners. He hit .319 in 153 games last season with the Arizona Diamondbacks, and launched 20 home runs while driving in 64 runs. Along with Segura, pitcher Zac Curtis and outfielder Mitch Haniger were traded to the Mariners back in November for starting pitcher Taijuan Walker and infielder Ketel Marte.
The extension will cover what would have been several years of free agency eligibility, as the Mariners are hoping to lock up their infielders since Kyle Seager and Robinson Cano are also on long-term contracts. Segura had previously played almost exclusively in the National League, except for one at-bat with the Los Angeles Angels back in 2012. He was then traded to the Milwaukee Brewers, with whom he played until 2016 when he was acquired by Arizona. For the Brewers, Segura hit as low as .246, but as high as .294.
