Chris Getz Promoted to General Manager
Getz will now hold the final voice for the entire White Sox department after the team let go of executive vice president Ken Williams and former general manager Rick Hahn. Both were relieved of their responsibilities on August 22.
Getz, who recently turned 40, oversaw the team’s minor league operations for the past seven years. His promotion puts some weight on his shoulders as it will now be up to him to get things turned around in Chicago. Last season, the White Sox registered an 81-81 record and missed the playoffs. They sit at 53-81 this season and are 16 games back. They are games away from being eliminated from the playoffs once again. During his general manager tenure, he hopes to get things back on track in Chicago where they have been before – competing in the playoffs.
Playing Career
Getz, a former infielder, played for the Chicago White Sox, the Kansas City Royals, and the Toronto Blue Jays. He made his major league debut for the White Sox on August 12, 2008. After that season, he was named to the 2009 Topps All-Star Rookie Roster. Injuries tormented his years in Kansas City. He only played part of the season of baseball there. Finally, he signed a minor league contract with the Blue Jays and eventually announced his retirement on May 16, 2014. For his career, he batted .250, with three home runs, 111 RBI, and 89 total stolen bases.
Getz has a seasoned baseball mind with all of his MLB experience, and the organization hopes that it translates over to turn the Chicago White Sox’s recent struggles around.
