Milwaukee Brewers Claim Tim Lopes off Waivers

Tim Lopes Brewers

Tim Lopes, an infielder-outfielder from the Seattle Mariners organization, was claimed off waivers by the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday.

The 26-year-old was designated for assignment Friday after the Mariners signed pitcher Chris Flexen. By adding Lopes, the Brewers’ 40-man roster stands at 37.

More Versatility

Lopes made his major-league debut in 2019, batting .270 with one home run and 12 RBI in 128 plate appearances covering 41 games. In 2020, Lopes played in 46 of 60 Mariners games, hitting .238 with two home runs and 15 RBI in 151 plate appearances. He also has 11 career stolen bases in 14 attempts.

Defensively, Lopes is primarily a corner outfielder, but he also has played three games at second base and one at third base. Lopes is likely to start the 2021 season at Triple-A Nashville.

Montgomery To Angels

The Brewers suffered a key loss in the front office when Ray Montgomery reportedly left to join new general manager Perry Minasian’s staff with the Los Angeles Angels.

Montgomery had been a vice president and special assistant to the general manager on the staff of David Stearns. Montgomery has also been a prominent voice in the front office, primarily on the scouting side.

Perdomo Joins Crew

Right-hander Luis Perdomo signed a minor-league contract with the Brewers last week, the team announced. Perdomo had been released by the San Diego Padres on Nov. 23.

Perdomo is expected to miss the entire 2021 season after having Tommy John surgery. After starting 59 of his first 76 career appearances with the Padres, Perdomo has been a reliever in all but two of his 57 appearances the last two seasons.

The move is a gamble for the Brewers. Not only is Perdomo coming off major elbow surgery, but the 27-year-old has a 5.19 ERA in 444.1 innings for his career.

Minor Moves

The Brewers also announced last week they had signed left-handed pitcher Hoby Milner and outfielder Dylan Cozens to minor-league contracts with an invitation to spring training. Outfielder/first baseman Dustin Peterson also signed a minor-league contract, while right-hander Wilber Diaz was released.

Milner has a 4.53 ERA over 55 2/3 MLB innings with three teams. Cozens also has MLB experience, having played in 27 games over the 2018 and 2019 seasons. Peterson has 19 games in the majors with two teams.

Also, the Brewers acquired left-handed pitcher Leo Crawford from the Los Angeles Dodgers to complete the Dec. 2 trade for right-handed pitcher Corey Knebel.
