New York Mets Sign Trevor May To Two-Year Contract

Trevor May

It was a bit of a slow start to the off-season, but the New York Mets have officially made their first significant addition with the signing of relief pitcher Trevor May. The two sides agreed to a two-year contract pending a physical, according to Jeff Passan. The salary has yet to be announced at this time.

The right-hander pitched for the Minnesota Twins for six seasons and had his best year in 2019. He missed the entire 2017 season after Tommy John surgery and has pitched to an ERA of 3.13 since 2018. May has shown that he can pitch in just about any role out of the bullpen and has had at least two saves in each of the past three seasons while being a starter earlier in his career.

May has never pitched in more than 65 games in a season, but he was on pace to do so in 2020 with 24 appearances in 60 games. The 31-year-old does not walk many batters and has a done a pretty good job of limiting the home run ball. May is a hard thrower that has struck out 10.5 batters per nine innings over his six-year career. His arsenal consists of a sinker, slider, curveball, and changeup that he can throw at any time.

Role With the Mets

New York has struggled in the bullpen for much of the past few seasons, so May should bring some stability to the backend. Manager Luis Rojas has shown in his first season that he is willing to pitch his best relief pitchers multiple innings. May should follow a similar path and will be joining a bullpen consisting of Edwin Diaz, Dellin Betances, and Jeurys Familia.

The Mets have already signed Arodys Vizcaíno and Jacob Barnes this off-season and have Brad Brach returning to the team in 2021.
