Before the New York Mets game against the Boston Red Sox Wednesday night, the Mets announced that they placed outfielder Jake Marisnick on the injured list with a left hamstring strain.
Marisnick had been dealing with the same injury in spring training, and will now be sidelined for the foreseeable future. In a corresponding move, they called up Ryan Cordell from their Brooklyn taxi squad and outrighted pitcher Jordan Humphreys for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.

The former Houston Astros center fielder has appeared in all five games this season but has yet to start. Marisnick came in for defense for J.D. Davis on four different occasions and had one hit in four at-bats.
Cordell, who had a terrific spring training both at the plate and in the field, will be looking to make his Mets debut after signing as a minor league free agent in January of 2020. Cordell hit .270 this spring with a home run after playing in 26 games for the Chicago White Sox.
He will likely fill a similar role to Marisnick as a defender late in games. Manager Luis Rojas has made it clear early in his managerial career that he will go to his best defensive team late in games. Cordell has been given the first shot, despite the Mets re-signing Juan Lagares earlier this summer.
Jordan Humphreys
The DFA for Humpreys comes as a surprise as they signed him prior to the season along with six other free agents. However, the Mets have already cut two of them in Stephen Gonsalves and now Humphreys. They also cut outfielder Melky Cabrera and Gordon Beckham, who they signed prior to the start of the 60-game season.
With the Mets thin on starting pitching with the injuries to Noah Syndergaard and Marcus Stroman, the Mets let go another starting pitcher after David Peterson’s first MLB win Tuesday night.
Fortunately, with the Mets depth in the outfield, they will have plenty of options to replace Jake Marisnick. However, he was an acquisition by general manager Brodie Van Wagenen in the offseason and was supposed to be a key piece for the 2020 team.
