The Boston Red Sox reportedly added right-handed pitcher Robert Stock off of waivers. Stock spent the early portion of the year with the Philadelphia Phillies and will be spending the foreseeable future down in Pawtucket.

Boston Red Sox Claim Robert Stock Off Waivers
The Boston Red Sox pitching staff currently leaves a lot to be desired. In an effort to fix this, Chaim Bloom and company appear to be claiming just about every arm they can get their hands on. This strategy of quantity over quality has been going on since the offseason and appears to be the best move possible, considering the ownership-imposed financial limitations.
Robert Stock spent the 2020 offseason with the Philadelphia Phillies but didn’t make it in a single game. The right-handed pitcher spent the vast majority of his career to date in the minors, and only has 50.1 major league innings to his name.
In 2019, Stock pitched 10.2 innings for the San Diego Padres. During his time on the mound, Stock put together an uninspiring 10.12 ERA with a 5.37 FIP, 5.17 xFIP, and a -0.1 fWAR.
Stock’s best season came in 2018. Once again with the Padres, Stock made it on to the major league mound for 39.2 innings. During his time on the rubber, Stock finished the year with an impressive 2.50 ERA, 2.71 FIP, and a 3.92 xFIP. This is obviously a small sample, but his 8.62 K/9 and 2.95 BB/9 are encouraging signs for the future.
Stock initially began his MLB career as a second-round pick in the 2009 MLB Draft. Selected by the St. Louis Cardinals, Stock actually started his career as a catcher. However, he couldn’t make it out of High-A and the organization eventually decided to try him out as a pitcher.
Stock and the Cardinals organization parted ways following the 2014 season, and he signed a minor league deal with the Houston Astros. However, the team released him prior to the start of the minor league season. The righty eventually played with the Reds, Pirates, and in independent ball before he finally made it with the Padres.
