Luis Rojas Named New York Mets Manager

The New York Mets manager search has ended with Luis Rojas set to take over the team. Rojas comes in after Carlos Beltran reportedly stepped down after being named in the report of the Houston Astros electronic sign-stealing scandal. The Mets originally hired Beltran in November of 2019.

The Mets are currently finalizing a multiyear contract with Rojas. There are no reports on how much money Rojas will make and if the Mets will have the same assistant coached under him. Newly hired bench coach Hensley Meulens is reportedly high on the Boston Red Sox list to replace Alex Cora.

Qualifications

Luis Rojas has been a minor league coach with the Mets since 2007. He started as a coach with the Dominican Summer League Nets in 2007 and the Gulf Coast League Mets in 2008.

In 2010 it was on to the Savannah Sand Gnats. In 2011 he was the manager of the Gulf Coast League Mets. Rojas then went back to Savannah in 2012 this time as the manager. Rojas held this position through the 2014 season.

In 2015 Rojas was named the manager of the St. Lucie Mets. Then in 2017, it was on to Binghamton as the manager of the Rumble Ponies for the next two seasons. In 2019 The Mets made him their quality control coach.

Rojas is part of the famous Alou family. His father is Felipe Alou and his brother is Moises Alou.

Moving On

The Mets did not have any involvement in the sign-stealing scandal, but they still found themselves looking for a new manager because of it. Despite the chaotic start to 2020, the team still has plenty of talent, and they look to remain competitive after winning 86 games in 2019.

There is no telling how long the questions about Beltran would have lasted, but now there is no question that the situation will not be a distraction. With Rojas at the helm, the team can hopefully move into 2020 distraction-free.
