3 Great Byron Buxton Trade Destinations That Make Sense

The Minnesota Twins have made their position clear.

Byron Buxton is not actively being shopped, and the franchise centerpiece also controls his future with a full no-trade clause.

That should end the conversation.

But every July, baseball reminds us that circumstances can change quickly.

If the Twins fall further out of contention or receive an offer too good to refuse, teams around the league will undoubtedly inquire about one of baseball’s most dynamic players.

When healthy, Buxton remains a game-changer. He combines Gold Glove-caliber defense in center field with elite speed, tremendous power, and the ability to take over games on both sides of the ball.

His injury history creates risk, but his upside is exactly why contenders would be willing to gamble.

If the impossible becomes possible, here are the three destinations that make the most sense.

1. Philadelphia Phillies

The Phillies have been chasing another World Series since reaching the Fall Classic in 2022, and adding a true everyday center fielder could push an already dangerous roster even closer to a championship.

Buxton would immediately become the club’s best defensive outfielder while adding another legitimate power threat to a lineup featuring Bryce Harper, Trea Turner, Kyle Schwarber, and Alec Bohm.

His athleticism would also allow the Phillies to improve their overall outfield alignment while strengthening one of the few areas that has remained inconsistent.

Proposed Return

Minnesota should begin negotiations by asking for Justin Crawford, one of the game’s premier outfield prospects and a potential long-term replacement in center field.

Mick Abel gives the Twins another controllable arm capable of pitching near the top half of a Major League rotation.

Aidan Miller would provide another high-upside infield prospect with middle-of-the-order potential.

It would be an expensive price for Philadelphia, but acquiring a player with Buxton’s impact almost always is.

2. Seattle Mariners

Few teams have a more obvious need than Seattle.

The Mariners continue to boast one of baseball’s best pitching staffs, but offensive consistency has repeatedly prevented them from taking the next step in the American League.

Buxton would immediately transform both the lineup and the defense.

Pairing him with Julio Rodríguez would give Seattle arguably the most athletic outfield in baseball while providing another dangerous right-handed bat capable of changing games with one swing.

Proposed Return

  • INF Cole Young
  • RHP Logan Evans
  • OF Lazaro Montes

Cole Young projects as a long-term everyday middle infielder.

Logan Evans has the potential to become a quality Major League starter.

Lazaro Montes possesses some of the biggest raw power in Seattle’s farm system and could eventually develop into a middle-of-the-order bat.

For Minnesota, it would represent a balanced return featuring upside, proximity, and long-term value.

3. San Diego Padres

If there is one executive who has never been afraid to make a blockbuster move, it’s Padres President of Baseball Operations A.J. Preller.

San Diego has consistently shown a willingness to acquire star talent, and Buxton would fit perfectly on a roster built around elite athleticism and postseason aspirations.

His defense would thrive in spacious Petco Park, while his power and speed would add another dimension to a lineup anchored by Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado, and Jackson Merrill.

For a franchise with championship ambitions, Buxton represents exactly the kind of impact player capable of changing a playoff series.

Proposed Return

  • SS Leo De Vries
  • RHP Humberto Cruz
  • OF Kavares Tears

The conversation would have to begin with Leo De Vries, one of baseball’s elite shortstop prospects and a player with superstar potential.

Humberto Cruz gives Minnesota another high-ceiling pitching prospect with impressive upside.

Kavares Tears adds a powerful, athletic outfielder who could become another cornerstone piece in the Twins’ next competitive core.

It would be a steep price for San Diego, but acquiring one of the game’s premier center fielders should require nothing less.

The Biggest Obstacle Isn’t Talent—It’s Buxton Himself

Finding teams interested in Byron Buxton isn’t difficult.

Nearly every contender would love to add a healthy version of one of baseball’s best all-around players.

The real hurdle is convincing Buxton to waive his no-trade clause.

The veteran has repeatedly expressed his desire to remain with the Twins, and Minnesota has publicly maintained that he remains a central part of its future.

That means any trade discussion begins with Buxton’s approval.

Without it, speculation remains exactly that—speculation.

The Last Word

The Twins are under no pressure to move Byron Buxton.

He’s one of the franchise’s most popular players, one of baseball’s elite defensive center fielders, and still possesses game-changing talent when healthy.

But baseball has a way of producing unexpected blockbusters every July.

If Minnesota decides to pivot toward the future, it should demand nothing short of franchise-altering prospect packages.

The Phillies, Mariners, and Padres each possess the combination of organizational depth, competitive urgency, and financial flexibility to make such a deal happen.

Whether Buxton would ever agree to leave Minnesota is another question entirely—but if he does, the bidding could become one of the biggest stories of the trade deadline.
