Sports. Honestly. Since 2011

Mets second baseman Marcus Semien (10) turns a double play during the sixth inning against the Chicago Cubs at Citi Field.

Marcus Semien Placed on Injured List, Compounding Mets’ Relentless Injury Troubles

It’s been an injury-riddled season for the New York Mets, and it’s only June. Marcus Semien becomes the latest victim to land on the 10-day injured list. Semien suffered a strain in his hip flexor, according to the club.

Mets Position Player Moves

As Semien goes on the IL, the team hopes superstar Juan Soto will not need an IL stint of his own. Soto left Tuesday’s game against the Chicago Cubs during the middle innings due to what was described as left-side back tightness. Since then, he hasn’t appeared in a game, but New York is ruling him day-to-day.

It’s been a more-or-less disappointing season for Semien, by his standards and New York’s. The veteran has had hot spurts sporadically throughout the season, though they have been far fewer than the cold streaks. For the season, Semien is slashing .214/.271/.341 with nine home runs, 29 RBis, and a .613 OPS. Over his previous five games, Seminen had been on a brutal 1-for-19 stretch.

The 35-year-old had managed to stay healthy, appearing in all 80 games this season at second base. That streak will end now, with the club placing him on the IL.

In a corresponding move, the team recalled infielder Ronny Mauricio to the major leagues. Mauricio had also been on the IL due to a left knee fracture. He recently began a rehab assignment and is now back with the big-league team. He will likely see most of his defensive work at either second base or shortstop and could spend time at third base as well.

Mets Pitching Changes

Left-hander Zach Thornton will be re-called to start Friday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies, according to The Athletic’s Will Sammon. The Mets’ No. 12-ranked prospect is set to replace David Peterson, who was acquired by the Cubs in a trade late Wednesday night. Thornton made his MLB debut earlier this year and coughed up four runs in 4 1/3 innings.

The Mets plan to reinstate right-hander Christian Scott from the IL late this week. He will replace Kodai Senga’s spot in the rotation, with Senga moving to the bullpen.

Additionally, the Mets recalled righty Daniel Duarte to replace Jonathan Pintaro, who served as the 27th man for the Mets’ doubleheader on Wednesday. Duarte has not given up a run in five innings of work with the Mets this season.
