Lars Nootbaar is a step closer to returning to the St. Louis Cardinals. It was announced on Monday evening that the outfielder will start a rehab assignment on Tuesday with the organization’s Double-A affiliate, the Springfield Cardinals.
Nootbaar Joining Springfield
Nootbaar has not played in the majors this season following off-season surgery to treat Haglund’s deformities in each of his heels.
Nootbaar Joins Springfield Following a Stint in Memphis
Nootbaar joins Springfield following four games with the Memphis Redbirds, the organization’s Triple-A affiliate. The outfielder recorded three hits in 12 at-bats, including a home run.
What is perhaps the most encouraging about Nootbaar’s rehab stint in Memphis was that he played left field a few times, showing no signs of limitations following his recovery.
MLB Return Coming Soon?
There is a strategic reason Nootbaar is not remaining in Memphis. Springfield plays at home this week. While the Cardinals continue a busy May on the road this week, they will return home this weekend for a series with the Chicago Cubs. Should all go well with Nootbaar’s return, he could easily join the team for their rivalry series this weekend. St. Louis is only a little over three hours away from Springfield, so it would be easy for Nootbaar to make the trip over to rejoin the team.
Nootbaar Would Add Lefty Bat to Roster
Nootbaar is a career .242 hitter with 58 home runs. He is not known for his power, with his career high being just home runs (which he has done twice), but he would be another option for the Cardinals as they look to continue to exceed expectations this season.
Last Word On Baseball will provide updates on Nootbaar’s looming return as they become available.
