The Phillies hitting divide has contributed to the lack of offense in recent games.

Phillies Hitting Divide

The Philadelphia Phillies hitting divide has been a contributor to recent offensive struggles. In May the Phillies left-handed hitters have noticeably outperformed their right-handed hitters. This is a change from the Phillies offensive offense earlier in the regular season. Overall this season the Phillies have a .229/.298/.385 line with 62 home runs and 209 RBI in 53 games. The Phillies have a 91 wRC+ and a .268 BABIP this year. In May the Phillies have a .232/.291/.398 line with 29 home runs and 93 RBI in 22 games. The Phillies have a 91 wRC+ and a .272 BABIP in that span.

Phillies right-handed hitters have a .197/.253/.293 line with seven home runs and 30 RBI in 22 games in May. To add to that they have a 53 wRC+ and a 240 BABIP in that span. Phillies right-handed hitters have the worst OPS and second worst wRC+ in May. Meanwhile Phillies left-handed hitters have a .269/.332/.504 line with 22 home runs and 61 RBI in 22 games in May. Furthermore Phillies left-handed hitters have a league leading 131 wRC+ and a .310 BABIP in May. Phillies left-handed hitters also have the highest OPS among teams left-handed hitters in May. This is the Phillies hitting divide.

Lack Of Offense From Right-Handed Hitters

With Trea Turner struggling there have been calls to rearrange the top of the lineup. Turner has a .186/.228/.267 line with one home run and five RBI in 21 games in May. In addition to that Turner has an abysmal 36 wRC+ and a .238 BABIP this month. Turner is not the only one significantly struggling. Adolis García has a .141/.241/.211 line with one home run and four RBI in 21 games this month. García has a 32 wRC+ and a .214 BABIP in May. J.T. Realmuto has a .183/.242/.217 line with no home runs and five RBI in 17 games in May. Realmuto has a 30 wRC+ and a .216 BABIP in that stretch. This is not helpful.

Left-Handed Hitting Stars Performing

Bryce Harper is having an elite season in 2026. To add to that Harper is having an outstanding May with a .289/.371/.579 line with six home runs and 13 RBI in 22 games. Harper also has a team leading 159 wRC+ and a .291 BABIP this month. Meanwhile Kyle Schwarber is also performing at an all-star level with a .228/.291/.608 line with nine home runs and 16 RBI in 19 games this month. Schwarber has a 145 wRC+ and a .281 BABIP in May. Bryson Stott has stepped up and provided a .276/.317/.553 line with five home runs and 20 RBI in 22 games in May. To add to that Stott has a 139 wRC+ and a .271 BABIP in May.

How To Fix Things

The Phillies hitting divide can be addressed through batting order changes. Some possible Phillies lineup tweaks may have been considered at the start of the season after offseason additions. Now interim manager Don Mattingly should seriously consider moves. Having Harper or Schwarber bat leadoff with the other batting third and Turner in between them would be more beneficial. Harper is known to be picky about batting third. However, he needs to change that and be a team player here. For now Alec Bohm should bat cleanup. The spot needs to be addressed at the trade deadline though.

Roster Construction Issues Create The Phillies Hitting Divide

This has been a continuous problem for the Phillies. While García has been a better defender in right field than Nick Castellanos, the offensive production has been disappointing. García is a candidate to be released later on in the season. It is unlikely that García would be released until after the trade deadline. The decision to re-sign catcher Realmuto still makes sense because of the lack of depth at the position. Ultimately the players might simply need to play better.
