Built, Not Bought: The Rise of Two Homegrown Red Sox Aces

It’s been 24 years since the Red Sox drafted and developed their own ace, when they selected Jon Lester in the 2nd round of the 2002 MLB Draft. After over two decades of searching for and trying to develop another ace, it seems the Red Sox have finally struck gold with not just one, but two young stars who are winning over the hearts of Red Sox Nation and taking the league by storm.

Red Sox Fans Will Love Connelly Early, Payton Tolle Updates | Yardbarker

Payton Tolle

The Red Sox drafted Payton Tolle with the 50th overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft after a successful college career at TCU. Making his Major League debut in August of 2025, Tolle worked quickly to become a household name for the Red Sox, becoming one of the fastest players to ever make their debut after being drafted by the Red Sox just the year prior. Tolle is a polarizing figure on the mound, standing at 6’6 “, 250lbs. with a fastball that has touched over 100mph.

Tolle started this season in AAA after not making the team out of spring training, but that changed quickly when he was called up in April, making just three starts in the minor leagues. Despite not picking up the win, Tolle dazzled in his 2026 debut, striking out 11 Yankee hitters over 6 innings, including five straight to start the game.

How has Payton Tolle fared this season?

2026 has been the year of Payton Tolle so far. After his recent performance against the Atlanta Braves, Tolle now sits at a 2.05 ERA over five games, with an impressive 0.78 WHIP, while striking out 30 batters in 30.2 innings pitched. Tolle has risen to the occasion after ace, and Cy Young runner-up Garret Crochet went down with an injury. After not knowing where his place on the team would be to start the year, Payton Tolle has solidified himself as a core piece in one of baseball’s best rotations.

Connelly Early

Connelly Early was selected by the Red Sox with the 151st overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft, one year before teammate Payton Tolle. While it took Early an extra season to make it to the big leagues, he has certainly solidified himself as a true future ace of the Red Sox for many seasons to come. Early was called up in 2025 and shocked not just Red Sox fans, but all of Major League Baseball. Posting a 2.33 ERA in four starts, Early earned an opportunity to pitch in the postseason against the rival New York Yankees.

This season, Connelly Early made the big league club straight out of spring training, showing the faith the Red Sox have in the young southpaw. The lefty has proven that his small sample size in 2025 was not a fluke. In nine starts this season, Early has posted a 3.21 ERA across 47.2 innings pitched, making the core four lefties of himself, Garrett Crochet, Ranger Suárez, and Payton Tolle a nightmare for any lineup that has to go against them.

For many years, the Red Sox aces have consistently had to come from spending big on free-agent pitchers such as David Price and Ranger Suarez and trading from their talented prospect pool to acquire the likes of Chris Sale and Garret Crochet.

Now the Red Sox find themselves with two future aces without having to spend big. The future is bright for both Payton Tolle and Connelly Early, and it is certain that they will be contributors and leaders of baseball’s best rotation for years to come.
