Astros Suffer Another Setback with Correa’s Devastating Injury

When Carlos Correa got unexpectedly scratched from the Houston Astros starting lineup on Tuesday night, there wasn’t really a huge concern. However, there must have been some thoughts in the back of Astros fans’ minds if that meant yet another long-term injury blow.

It ended up being the worst-case scenario possible. This wasn’t just a long-term injury where there’s a chance of coming back. Correa is out for the season with a torn left ankle tendon, in a disastrous development for the Astros.

Carlos Correa Injury Deals Astros a Massive Setback

This came out of nowhere, but just continues the theme of overwhelming injury issues for the Astros’ season so far. It’s been one injury after another. Just when the Astros had their best win of the season against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the team took another step back. Correa, a true leader and vital member of the lineup, will be mightily missed. He will require season-ending surgery after injuring the ankle while taking swings during batting practice in the cage before Tuesday’s game.

Correa Gives More Details

“I was hitting in the cage, a normal day, feeling great. Went through my routine and took a swing and just felt a pop. It snapped on me, and I fell to the ground and couldn’t put weight on it,” Correa said. “It was a normal swing. I felt a lot of pop. I heard it and felt it. Right away, I knew something was wrong.”

He was clearly disappointed and down in the media availability on Wednesday morning. This isn’t something new for Correa, who has dealt with his fair share of injuries over his 12-year career. However, this might be the most difficult injury to overcome as he will now miss the most games in a single season of his career.

“Really tough, not what I was expecting, but it’s time to deal with it, face it head-on, and focus on the rehab,” Correa said.

The Season So Far for Carlos Correa

The three-time All-Star was one of the best bats in the lineup, hitting leadoff and cleanup for the Astros with a .279 average and .787 OPS. Correa hit three home runs and had 16 RBI, along with 34 hits in 32 games. The 31-year-old was constantly rotating between shortstop and third base this season for the Astros due to Jeremy Peña’s injury. Correa headed back to the Astros last season from the Minnesota Twins in the biggest move of the trade deadline for the Astros. The 2017 World Series champion spent the first seven seasons in Houston as the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2012 before he signed a massive deal with the Twins in the 2021 offseason.

Astros Injury Issues Keep on Going

Correa is a fan favorite and delivered a number of incredible plays, especially during the team’s postseason runs.  The Astros have already struggled this season, with a 15-22 record at the time of the Carlos Correa injury. This is now the fifth player in the Astros starting lineup who is out due to injury. Correa joins Peña, Jake Meyers, Yainer Diaz, and Joey Loperfido on the injured list.

The Astros have a total of 14 players on the IL at this point, just over a month into the season. Isaac Paredes ultimately not being traded during the offseason has now turned into a great move for the team. He’ll now officially be an everyday player for the team at third base.

The Positive News for the Astros

While the Carlos Correa injury is obviously a big blow to the Astros’ chances of getting out of this hole, it’s not as brutal as it could be. Having Paredes softens that blow.

The good news for the Astros is that Peña is expected to return in the middle of the month from his rehab of a Grade 1 hamstring strain. The former Gold Glove winner will slide right into his starting shortstop position. An infield of Walker, Altuve, Peña, and Paredes is quite strong and was the starting group in 2025 before injuries set in.

Besides that, the starting center fielder in Meyers and left fielder in Loperfido will also be back this month. Correa will still be available as the leader of the clubhouse and in the dugout, even if he doesn’t have a presence on the field.

While the Astros rotation and bullpen have already been under severe strain, it’s the best offense in the American League that will need to somehow survive the first few weeks of May. The reinforcements are on their way. The Astros are lucky to be in the AL West, and only trail the division by four games to the Athletics.
