Sports. Honestly. Since 2011

Max Fried and Cam Schlittler will be x-factors in the 2026 Yankees rotation.

A Look at Two Yankees Starting Rotation X-Factors This Season

The 2026 season is a huge one for the New York Yankees. After an early postseason exit last year, the club needs a strong rebound. To do so, they’ll expect contributions from their starting rotation, specifically two main x-factors

Brian Cashman and his front office decided to run it back this season, with 98% of the team from last season returning. They plugged holes and polished both the bullpen and the starting rotation. Ryan Weathers was added in the offseason as one of the only notable acquisitions.

Cashman is confident in his club and current roster. Their main key to success starts with health. The starting rotation has two x-factor pitchers currently rehabbing and preparing for a return: Gerrit Cole and Luis Gil

New York will depend on a diverse rotation that consists of some strong options. The two main x-factor starting pitchers for the Yankees to start the season are Max Fried and Cam Schlittler

Two X-Factors in the 2026 Yankees Rotation

Max Fried

Some may say Fried is not an x-factor, but a baseline or a foundation to the pitching staff. Cole may be a true x-factor when he’s back and up to full health. Until then, who is the arm you send to the bump for a must-win game?

Fried would answer that question.  The baseline argument for his x-factor status lies in his statistics from 2025. His first year in the pinstripes was a success. Fried’s main x-factor statistic from 2025 was his WAR, which was 4.5.

The left-hander led the league in wins last season with a 19-5 record; he also led in win-loss percentage at .792. Fried kept his ERA sub-3.00, at 2.86 to be exact. The current Yankees ace finished last year with 195 1/3 innings pitched.

His innings total illustrates his ability for depth; he’s a workhorse and will work into games, putting minimal stress on the bullpen.  Fried possesses a six-pitch repertoire, which puts him at an advantage for outs.

The left-hander holds great strikeout/walk numbers. He struck out 189 hitters last season, only walking 51. He’s had five seasons where he’s recorded 150-plus strikeouts. Three of his six pitch options value a 20-plus percent put-away rate.

Fried will work his hitters, putting them at a disadvantage, not giving much to get burnt on. Hitters roll over for groundouts and weak flyouts. In 2025, Fried had a 52.6% groundball rate, 22.2% flyball rate, and a 57.4% AIR.

The Yankees’ left-hander sets the tone for the pitching staff, being a baseline battler. He’s a big game pitcher and a long-term grinder. Until Cole returns, Fried is an x-factor in this rotation.

Cam Schlittler

Schlittler is one of the top young pitchers in the game of baseball today. He’s shown massive ability to pitch at this level, and the ability to silence strong lineups.

The Yankees’ top pitching prospect worked multiple innings last year, including the postseason. He’s kicked off 2026 with a 2-0 record in three starts and 16 2/3 innings of work. Schlittler has struck out 22 batters so far of his 58 batters faced, and has not walked a batter yet.

Schlittler uses his pitches in a diverse manner, and they all have put-away ability. His velocity is up there, and his ability to force groundouts is present.

The young right-hander is very dependable in the rotation, pounds the zone, and commands his options very well. He does this with conviction and is very effective against his opponents. Schlittler will play a big role in 2026. His health and load management will be key in maintaining his overall performance.
