The Chicago Cubs are signing second baseman Nico Hoerner to a six-year extension, according to MLB Network insider Jon Heyman. The deal comes on the day of the Cubs’ season opener, a 10-4 home loss to the Washington Nationals. Hoerner went 0-for-4 in the game, reaching on an error and scoring a run. The financial details of the extension have not been reported yet. The 28-year-old Hoerner was widely considered to be on the trade market this offseason. However, no deal went through, and this extension should put trade talks to bed for the foreseeable future.

Hoerner debuted with the Cubs in the 2019 season. A first-round draft pick out of Stanford in 2018, he only saw limited big-league action through the 2021 season, playing under 50 games in his first three years. His breakout finally came in 2022. Hoerner played in 135 games, hitting .281 with 10 home runs, 55 RBI, and a .736 OPS. This performance garnered him a three-year extension that was set to expire after this season.

While not known for his power, Hoerner has been a steady contact hitter for the last several seasons, upping his average to .297 in 2025. He also provides excellent defense at second base, with two Gold Gloves to his name already (2023, 2025). This extension further cements a strong Cubs infield expected to help them contend in the National League Central for years to come. With Michael Busch manning first base, Dansby Swanson at shortstop, and the newly signed Alex Bregman at the hot corner, Chicago has star power up and down the lineup once again, a decade after their World Series drought ended.
Hoerner’s deal also comes on the heels of center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong‘s six-year extension earlier this week. The Cubs front office certainly believes that locking up its young core is the way to go.
