Dodgers second baseman Hyeseong Kim (6) warms up before a game at Dodger Stadium

Dodgers Rookie Set to Return When Rosters Expand

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts announced that rookie Hyeseong Kim will return to the club on September 1st, according to Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic. Kim will be the one position player added when rosters around the league expand next week. Teams are allowed to add one pitcher and one position player with one month to go in the regular season. As a result, the Dodgers will not have to make a corresponding roster move.

Dodgers infielder Hyeseong Kim will open the season in the minors, Dave Roberts said.

Roberts: Hyeseong Kim to Return to Dodgers to Start September

The Rookie Spark

Kim failed to make the roster out of spring training. Los Angeles thought he needed to refine his offensive approach to be ready for major-league pitching. However, when multiple injuries hit the Dodgers, and when he enjoyed some success in the minors thanks to a new swing, Kim was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City. The rookie made the most of his opportunity. His speed, slick fielding, and hitting prowess provided a spark to an inconsistent offense. In limited at-bats, Kim was flirting with a .400 batting average.

A Bump in the Road

Kim began struggling in June, when his batting average dipped in the .220s for the month. Many speculated that pitchers had begun to figure out the rookie. That may be true, but it was also revealed that Kim was dealing with a sore shoulder, an injury that kept him out for more than a month.

Trending in the Right Direction

The Dodgers have been fighting to stay healthy all season. All-Star third baseman Max Muncy has been sidelined twice this year. However, he is taking batting practice and is scheduled to return during the next road trip. Unfortunately, recent addition Alex Call and first baseman Freddie Freeman are out of tonight’s lineup due to minor ailments. Hopefully, these things don’t turn into a long-term concern.

The Dodgers look like they could be fighting their way into October, and they need to keep the injury bug away.
