Possible Cubs Trade Piece Joins MLB’s Top 100 Prospects List

With the trade deadline approaching quickly, the Chicago Cubs are bound to make some big moves. Although they have been considered one of the best teams so far this year, they still have needs. Most importantly, they need to trade for more starting pitching. They may also look to acquire a third baseman and relief pitchers. With all these trades going down, they will probably have to give up some excellent prospects. The Cubs currently have five top-100 prospects, with their newest being right-hander Jaxon Wiggins. He is Chicago’s  No. 5 prospect, and recently, he deservingly slid into the MLB Pipeline Top 100, sitting in the last spot at 100.

Knoxville Smokies pitcher Jaxon Wiggins (41) pitches during a minor league baseball game between the Knoxville Smokies and Chattanooga Lookouts at Covenant Health Park in Knoxville, Tenn., on June 3, 2025.

Cubs Prospect Jaxon Wiggins Breaks Into MLB’s Top 100 List

So far this year, Wiggins has pitched at both High-A and Double-A in the Cubs’ organization, and to say that he has performed well is an understatement. Between the two levels, he has pitched to a 2.09 ERA in 60 1/3 innings. Not only does he have a stellar ERA, but he also has a 0.994 WHIP and 11 K/9 rate. He currently resides in Double-A Knoxville but has split his 13 games almost evenly between High-A and Double-A.

Wiggins was drafted in the 2nd round of the 2023 draft out of Arkansas after an unremarkable college career. He features a very solid fastball that sits around 96-97 mph and can even hit triple digits at times. His best secondary pitch is a mid-80 mph slider that can generate swings and misses. He also features a changeup that needs some work, as it has been inconsistent. With Wiggins climbing the ranks in the minor leagues this year, he could very well be an important trade piece.

As mentioned above, the Cubs are destined to make some big moves. And as of right now, the Cubs don’t appear to have any untouchable prospects. Furthermore, Wiggins could very well be one of these prospects traded at the deadline. Along with his impressive play this year, a few of their other top prospects have been showing out this year, which is exactly what the Cubs’ organization wants. Although it is not yet certain which prospects will be traded, by July 31st, quite a few of them are fated to be gone.
