Yankees Actively Searching Trade Market for Third Base Help

The New York Yankees are reportedly searching for an upgrade at third base, particularly a right-handed hitter.  The club has reportedly placed names such as Eugenio Suarez and Ke’Bryan Hayes at the top of its list as it looks to move Jazz Chisholm Jr. back to second base, his natural position.

Third Base Struggles and Moving Chisholm Jr. Back to Second

As the Yankees continue to fight out of a midseason skid that saw the club fall out of first place in the American League East, they are looking to upgrade at third base, allowing Jazz Chisholm Jr. to move back to second base. Since losing Oswaldo Cabrera to an ankle injury, the club has split third base reps between Chisholm Jr., Oswald Peraza, and DJ LeMahieu.

Chisholm Jr. has impressed since returning from the I.L., hitting .308 with 8 home runs and 21 RBIs, and has been one of the club’s few bright spots during this rough stretch. Even though his bat has been hot, Chisholm Jr. has struggled defensively at times and has expressed his desire to return to second base. “Of course, I want to play second base, but whatever it takes for the team to win,” said Chisholm Jr. to Chris Kirschner of The Athletic last week.

Yankees Eyeing Right-Handed Third Basemen

With the club aware of Chisholm Jr.’s desire to return to second, and a clear need for another right-handed hitter, they have been surveying the market for an upgrade at the position. The club is reportedly high on Eugenio Suarez, who could be on the move if the Diamondbacks decide to sell at the deadline. Suarez is hitting .255 with 28 home runs and 73 RBIs in 2025 but recently expressed his desire to stay in Arizona.

Ke’Bryan Hayes’ name has also been floated around, with the Pittsburgh Pirates sure to be sellers. Hayes is currently hitting .244 with 2 home runs and 29 RBIs but is one of the game’s premier defenders at third base and won a Gold Glove in 2023. The Detroit Tigers and Chicago Cubs have also reportedly shown interest in Hayes.

The club has also reportedly shown interest in Colorado Rockies third baseman Ryan McMahon, along with considering a potential reunion with Pirates infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa. There were talks around a potential Nolan Arenado trade during the offseason, so the Yankees may be willing to revisit that if they feel the asking price is right.
