Hosmer’s Career Profile
Drafted by the Royals in the first round with the 3rd overall pick in the 2008 June Amateur Draft in 2008, Hosmer would make his MLB debut four years later in 2011. He would make an immediate impact in his rookie year batting a .293 batting average with 19 home runs and 78 RBI. Due to this incredible season, Hosmer finished third in Rookie of the Year voting. Two years later, during the 2013 season, Hosmer would win his first Gold Glove. In only his third year in the MLB, Hosmer hit an incredible .302 batting average with 17 home runs and 79 RBI. The next year, Hosmer would win his second Gold Glove. During that season, Hosmer would hit a .270 batting average with nine home runs and 58 RBI.
And in 2015, Hosmer would win his third consecutive Gold Glove. Not only that, but Hosmer and the Royals would become World Series champions, defeating the New York Mets in five games. During the regular season, Hosmer hit a .297 batting average with 18 home runs and 93 RBI. After this successful season, Hosmer finished 24th in MVP voting. During the championship postseason, Hosmer hit a .212 batting average with a home run and 17 RBI. After his World Series triumph, Hosmer would be nominated as an All Star in 2016. Not only that, but Hosmer would win the All-Star MVP that year. During that All-Star season, Hosmer would hit a .266 batting average with 25 home runs and 104 RBI.
Then last season, Hosmer would win yet another Gold Glove, as well as a Silver Slugger award. During the season, Hosmer would hit a career best .318 with 25 home runs and 94 RBI. Hosmer would also finish 14th that year in MVP voting. In total, Hosmer has won four Gold Gloves, a Silver Slugger, and has been an All-Star. His career stats include a .284 batting average with 127 home runs and 566 RBI.
Impact of the Signing
The Padres gain a player with an insane pedigree as well as a player coming off of a career year. For the Royals, they lose someone who was an instrumental part of their World Series run. But now Hosmer will go to San Diego and be the star they need.
