The Los Angeles Dodgers are finally getting some good news on the injury front. Right-handed relievers Kirby Yates and Michael Kopech are on the brink of returning to the major league roster. That is, if the live batting practice they threw went without a hitch, according to Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic.
In other news, there’s a chance that both Kirby Yates and Michael Kopech are active this weekend. Both threw live BPs today. Dave Roberts said there’s still stuff the pitching coaches would like to work on with Kopech.

Kirby Yates has been out since the last homestand with a strained hamstring. He was a late-offseason signing which looked like a luxury for the defending World Series Champions. However, as the injuries continue to mount to the Los Angeles pitching staff, the veteran reliever can’t return soon enough. The soon-to-be 38-year-old is 3-2 with a 4.34 ERA. He has pitched 18 2/3 innings with 31 strikeouts and one save. The Dodgers have six potential closers currently on the IL. If Yates proves to be healthy, it will increase manager Dave Roberts‘ reliable right-handed options.
A Long Road Back
Michael Kopech was a sneaky good trade acquisition. He was an incredible closer for the stretch run in 2024. The right-hander threw above 100 miles per hour and had a sub-2.00 ERA. However ,an undisclosed shoulder issue limited his control and availability during the postseason. The shoulder injury carried over to spring training this year and earned him a spot on the 60-day IL.
In multiple rehab appearances at Triple-A Oklahoma City, the velocity is there, but control remains a problem. It is the reason he may not come off the IL the same time as Yates.
What Broken Toe?
This encouraging news comes on the heels of Mookie Betts‘ return to the starting lineup. Betts promptly singled and scored from first on a double. It was a welcome sight for a team playing 26 games in 26 days, all against winning teams. And they are fighting to stay in first place in a competitive National League West.
At this point, the Dodgers need all (healthy) arms on deck.
