Tyrone Taylor Expected to Hit Injured List as Mets Skid Continues

The New York Mets’ losing skid continued Monday on Memorial Day after another ugly loss, falling 7-2 to the Cincinnati Reds at Citi Field. As if they needed it, the team took another hit during the game. Outfielder Tyrone Taylor was pulled from the game with what the Mets later described as “right hip pain.” Immediately following the game, manager Carlos Mendoza said Taylor will receive an MRI scan on Tuesday, and the Mets expect they will need to place him on the injured list. Though the severity is unknown, it will likely be a 10-day IL stint. “[Taylor] felt something [in the right hip]. It’s probably going to be an IL,” Mendoza said.

Tyrone Taylor Likely Headed to Injured List as Mets Lose Again

The injury occurred in the bottom of the sixth inning, when Taylor hit a ground ball and left the batter’s box to run to first base. Except he didn’t run, because he couldn’t. He pulled up limping right as he was about to leave the box and very slowly jogged back to the dugout, without touching first. Taylor was in clear pain.

The 32-year-old went straight down the Mets’ dugout with Joe Golia, the Mets’ head athletic trainer, not to be seen again this afternoon. If Taylor indeed goes on the IL, it will only add to a list that has been growing. On Monday, however, Mendoza gave injury updates for key players still on the IL. For a Mets team that has already been absolutely decimated with injuries, this is not what the Mets needed.

Taylor, who is in his third year as a Met, was the team’s fourth outfielder heading into the year. But with Luis Robert Jr. being on the IL since April and Juan Soto most recently out due to a sickness, Taylor has seen a ton of playing time in center field. For the season, Taylor is hitting a poor .186/.210/.320, with three home runs, 14 RBI, and a .530 OPS in 43 games.
