Sports. Honestly. Since 2011

The Yankees will have offseason decisons to make on middle infielders Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Anthony Volpe (pictured).

Yankees Recall Volpe A Week After Sending Him Down

The New York Yankees are recalling shortstop Anthony Volpe. This move comes just a little more than a week following his demotion to the minor leagues.

Yankees Recall Volpe

The 25-year-old shortstop was optioned to the minor leagues after being activated from the injured list. Volpe underwent shoulder surgery in the offseason. His injury created an opportunity for Jose Caballero to play, and the young infielder performed well. The Yankees had a decision to make as to what to do when Volpe was activated. The team chose to option him and continue to give the opportunity to Caballero.

Many wondered if and when Volpe would get another opportunity in the big leagues. His track record certainly shows his strong potential, but Cabellero was the hot hand that manager Aaron Boone simply had to keep playing.

Cabellero’s Injury Creates Opportunity

Just as Volpe’s injury created playing time for Cabellero, an injury to Cabellero is creating an opportunity for Volpe. Cabellero is hitting .259 with home runs, providing a spark in the Yankees’ lineup.

Cabellero was injured in Sunday’s game. He was diving back into first base and injured his hand. He is out for at least the next week and will likely be added to the injured list.

Volpe Can Regain Starting Role

Volpe has been a productive Yankee since his debut in 2023. He hit 21 home runs and finished eighth in Rookie of the Year voting. The following season, his numbers dipped, but he bounced back in 2025.

Now that Volpe is returning, he has an opportunity to regain his starting job. If he struggles, the Yankees will not hesitate to offer the opportunity back to Cabellero when he returns from injury.

Yankees’ Roster is Currently A Revolving Door

The Yankees have been busy with transactions the last few days. Between placing players on the injured list and calling up hopeful prospects, the roster has certainly been a revolving door. That is how baseball is sometimes. The important thing is that the team continues to play competitive baseball. They are currently in second place in the division, so they are right in the thick of things.
