Christian Scott (45) delivers a pitch for the Mets at Citi Field in May 2024.

Needing a Shakeup, Mets Plan to Call Up Christian Scott

Before Tuesday’s game against the Minnesota Twins, New York Mets Carlos Mendoza said that the team would call up Christian Scott to start Thursday’s series finale. While in part it’s a way to give Scott some major league reps, it’s also an effort to stanch the bleeding and end the panic among the fanbase. The Mets lost the series opener 5-3 on Tuesday night, extending their losing streak to 12 games. It is their longest skid since 2002. Scott’s call-up also coincides with the much-needed return of Juan Soto, who will be in the lineup on Wednesday after a calf injury kept him out for most of April so far.

Mets to Call Up Christian Scott to Start on Thursday

Thursday will be Scott’s first major league appearance since 2024. That season, the 2021 fifth-round draft pick started nine games for the Mets. He pitched to a 0-3 record with a 4.56 ERA, a 1.204 WHIP, and 39 strikeouts against 12 walks in 47 1/3 innings. However, an eventual UCL tear required Tommy John surgery, keeping Scott out in 2025. Now 26 years old, Scott began this season with Triple-A Syracuse. In three starts, he has a record of 0-2 with a 5.27 ERA, striking out 17 and walking two in 13 2/3 innings. That record and ERA aren’t pretty, but Scott’s improved control may have been one reason (aside from desperation) to make the move.

Scott’s assistance comes as multiple Mets starters are struggling. David Peterson‘s last few starts have been so bad that the team moved him to the bullpen. Mendoza said on Tuesday that Peterson will remain in that role for the time being. Meanwhile, Kodai Senga, originally slated to start on Thursday, will pitch this weekend instead. While there seems to be no easy fix to the Mets’ woes right now, they will take any help they can get as they look to get the season back on track.
